Best gaming headphones for under 150???

Thread Starter
I've been looking at getting a good pair of headphones for gaming and for use on my iPod. I was wondering what you guys think the best ones would be. I am willing to spend up to 150. I've been looking at grados but I can't find anything that tells me whether the 60s, 80s, or 125s would suit me better. I could definetly use some help lol.

i would spend a few days combing the forums at www.head-fi.org

figure out your musical tastes and gaming sound tastes and cater your can purchase to those needs.

I happen to like my Sennheiser HD-212Pro headphones...I got them from a Circuit City near me a few months back for $60...I don't regret spending $10 more than a Sony CD player I bought at the same time.

Link, if you are wondering...
Here

BTW, my computer is several years old, so I don't use them for gaming, only for that CD player I mentioned.

Grados are considered by many enthusiests to be the best sounding headphones, expecially at the sub $100 level with the SR-60 and SR-80. However they are not made for heavy Metal or for these purposes rapid gun fire and bomb explosions. They are more for cristal clear highs soothing mids and light but accurate bass.

I just bought a pair of Sennheiser PX-200 portable headphones for my laptop. While they didnt get the best reviews in the world due to their closed ear design (the PX-200s brother the PX-100 got much better reviews because it is an open ear design and thus sounds better). I wanted sound isolation and the best sound i can get in a portable design so i can fit it into my laptop case without hassel... The PX-200s were the only thing out there that fits all these criteria.

But like Maxvla said check out Head-fi.org as well as www.headroom.com and www.headwize.com

i was considering getting an echo indigo+grado sr80s with my new lappy (prolly dell 9100 with 9800 vidcard or a 4750 if that gets the 9800 as well; hope it does ), but have decided to go with plantronics DSP-500s, as they look pretty nice for their $60 price tag on newegg. plus, a built in mic would be nice for games with VoIP, i can't tell you how many times i've gotten killed in americas army, cs, etc. trying to type something. ARGHHHH!!!!!! lol

The Grados are probably the best gaming headphones in existance. They do everything perfectly - highs mids and lows. The sr80 is basically the sr60 but with better bass responce. I myself much prefer the sr80's but most people dont notice much of a difference. I have never tried the sr125's but they are supposed to be a major upgrade from the sr60/80.

I personally am not a fan of the sennheiser sound. IMHO (especially on the PX200's) the bass is so much better than the high's that although the highs arent half bad, you'll feel like you need to upgrade. Just recalling that difference causes me physical pain.

I would for sure recommend the grado sr60 unless noise leakage and blockage is a problem. Then I would recommend either the sony 7506 or v6 (same model) if you wanted closed headphones, or if you want in-ear ones (which cancel more sound) look into the sony ex71 or shure e2c.

By the way, although the px200's keep sound in, they dont keep much sound out.

I personally think thei highs and mids are very clear on the px200.... its the bass that im not thrilled with... sounds so thin... Ive probably only used them for about three hours total so hopefully the drivers will set some and the bass with become fuller as time goes by. They keep sound out much better than my last pair of headphones (Sony V-300) and keep sound in better as well. Build construction is great and the whole design is very impressive. Sound-wise though, i still have mized feelings.

The PX200 requie a very long burn in time. Come back to me after 30-40 hours of use.

As long as they get better.... I could also use a longer cord. How long of a burn-in time before i get that?

LMAO! i'm sure there's headphone extension cords out there depending on the type of jack/plug it uses. it's a 1/8"/3.5mm, right? remember, for things like this, google is your friend...

I do quite well with my plantronics a.90 headset. The sound and microphone are both really good.

The Grado sr80s are nice but to me the sound is a bit too bright for my taste and makes my ears tried. For me im in the sennheiser camp hd580s are simply the best headphones ive used little more then 150 bux tho, im doolin over the hd650s myself too bad they are 450 and im dirt poor atm . AKG also makes some good cans but get pretty pricey pretty fast.

I second the sennheiser 580's. The difference between something say plantronics and a pair of sennheisers is that sennheiser is headphones made for professional studio use. And they use the same quality standards for headphones for the regular audiophile. So obviously professional quality studio headphones are vastly superior to your 15 dollar plantronics made for the general populace. (not to be condescending in any way to plantronics, that's actually what I used at cpl a couple years ago)

I for one prefer to have a microphone attached to my gaming headset. For this, I chose the Sennheiser PC150s. They are excellent and reasonably priced. For my mobile mp3 player use, I prefer something small and foldable. So, I grabbed the amazing Koss Portapros. They're better than the Sennheiser PX100s for half the price.

If you don't need a mic, and you don't mind something big and bulky, get anything out of the Sennheiser HD series.
