What is your worry with the 3M tape or foam padding? It's essentially the same as the pads that Dell uses under the right-hand side.......

i dunno, my fans been turnin' on a lot after i did the mod. like it'll just be sittin' there, haven't touched it in a coupla hours, lid's closed, LCD not on for a coupla hours, yet when i put my ear down to it, i can hear the fan running. i've also noticed that the sticky part to the 3M tape is melting a lil.

I just realized that my Vaio does this a very little. I never noticed it in two years. Is it so noticeable in the 8600, or is it more because you were looking for it that you saw it?

It varies from machine to machine. On mine its not that bad, but it is noticable. Others are worse, which is why people do the keyboard mod.

Does it make typing difficult? On mine, I only noticed it when I pressed hard on the key, much harder than I need to to type that letter, so with the 8600, does it happen even if you barely push the key?

No, it doesn't make typing difficult at all, its essentially the same in that regard. It just alters the "feel" of the keyboard, most people prefer the firmer feel which is why they would fix the issue with that mod.

For quick touch-typing, the flex issue is a non-issue.
