Recording stereo audio with 8790

Basically, how do I do it? Mic in is mono, and there seem to be no other audio input ports. Someone said the 88xx comes with a dongle that allows stereo recording via the S/PDIF port and suggested that the 8790 might also come with one, but I don't think I received such a dongle. Besides the modem cable and a few extra screws and jumpers, this is all I received with the computer:

This appears to be an S-Video to component video adapter. Please help; I want to digitize some old vinyls. Thanks.

I can only help based on my 8890, it's all I have, but on that there are three 3.5mm audio jacks, the middle one of the three can be toggled between stereo rear channel out and stereo line in, via the 'AC97 audio configuration' (usually a blue and yellow icon in the system tray), inside the 'speaker configuration' tab. Make sure the port is set to line in, select line in in your recording properties (volume control, options, properties, pick recording, ok, check the 'line in' tickbox under ths slider). You should then be able to record stereo via this port.

Also, as a rule, you shouldnt use the microphone port with anything other than PC microphones, it's a powered port that I believe can damage equipment that isnt designed to use it.

You wont be needing the adapter in your photo, it's for video only.

Hope some of this is relevant to the 8790.

Thanks, Robert. I just got the callback from Sager. Apparently you need the tv tuner card in order to record stereo audio. That ain't right.

Hi Sushifiend,

This is somewhat off the topic. What software do you use for such purpose? Can I use it for audio tapes?

Funny enough, I was just wondering the same thing today at work. Was thinking the solution would be to buy an external soundcard, but that was just random thoughts. I haven't looked into it at all.

What you've heard kind of backs up what I was thinking.

Believe the pictured above would indeed be an S-Video to RGB cable, most likely to be used for HDTV output. Video only, mind you. Actually, quite a nice accessory to include. The NP88xx series did not include this cable in the standard package.

Would agree with FriedToast. While the integrated sound with any of the recent Sager models is above average in comparison with most other notebooks, it is still unfortunately notebook sound and is often plagued with a number of issues, especially in regards to quality of output and input. External sound bypasses these issues, with several solutions currently available - some USB driven, some PCMCIA driven. The higher end of the spectrum (both in cost and performance) seem to be PCMCIA solutions. You might look here at any of the Echo Indigo line of products (specifically the Indigo IO).

Good luck.
