DVI does not work, but VGA converter does

I have a LCD monitor that only works when I use the VGA adaper that came with the laptop. When I use the DVI cabel that came with the monitor I get nothing. When I use that same cable and connect it to another computer the monitor works perfectly. Does anybody have any ideas on this?

Thanks

Did you make sure in your Display Settings -> Advanced -> Displays that you enabled the external "FPD" as opposed to the external "Monitor" (i.e. analog monitor - don't ask where ATI came up with those things)?

Also, while I have been able to get the DVI output to talk to my ViewSonic VX2000 in 1280x1024, I haven't been able to use the 1600x1200 resolution, which effectively makes the DVI output useless for me. Sager tech support was unable to help on this issue.

The monitor appears as FPD, but no picture or signal reaches the monitor. The monitor claims nothing is connected an goes to sleep. No adustments to the monitor make any difference. Repeating these same events with another machine causes the monitor to work like a dream. I was just hoping that I was missing some setting on the 8790, but it looks like there is some sort of hardware problem with the DVI port.

iniquitous,

Give up! I have been using my 8790 for 2.5 years now, and for all that time it is has been connected to an external 1600x1200 display, and I have not been able to use DVI. This is a shame, because there is a stunning difference in sharpness of the image when using DVI instead of VGA. I only managed to get the DVI to work at ridiculous resolutions, like maybe 1280x1024. And I say ridiculous, because you wouldn't bother getting an external monitor to get this type of low resolution.

One thing, amongst many others, that went wrong with Sager.

Thanks for the feedback, Alex. That's a real shame. My Sager is still doing very well for me in all other regards, but this is disappointing.
