ATI is more expensive, NVidia is not. ATI is better, Nvidia is not. I am straight, Elijah Wood is not

ATI has the current speed title. Nvidia is generally regarded as having better OpenGL support for graphics editing/CAD/etc. For gaming, the ATI is a better choice, however, I have the ATI 9600 and it works very well in the CAD software that I use.

It depends on which games you plan on playing on the laptop. If your're in the DOOM 3 camp, NVidia would be your best bet. If Half-Life 2 in in your furure, ATI is where you want to go.

Eitherway, if you go with an Alienware, you can always upgrade later.

LOL...

From what I've read on the forums, ATI customers seem to be more satisfied with their product than Nvidia. I agree with the consensus that AW is the way to go whichever card you decide upon.

The current ati cards 9600/9700 will play every game currently on the market and probably the next few that come out as well....

if you constantly wait for the newer hardware to come out you'll find yourself waiting forever as there is always a new great card scheduled to come out...

get one of the current cards now, the beauty of these machines is you can upgrade the card later!

well from what ive read the out of the box benchmarks in 3dmark03 are:
Radeon9700: 3400
Nvidia 5700: 3100

I know someone that has an Area-51 and he recently updated his graphics card to 64 MB. He said he was waiting for the 128 to come out and since it didn't for awhile he purchased the 64 MB. He now tells me that his MB wouldn't support the 128 MB card even if he did get it. I don't know how old his comp is, but I guess its a couple years old or more. So I am assuming you might now be able to upgrade the GPU, but maybe once twice if your lucky and they have a BIOS update. I am still debating on the Dell XPS, Sager NP 8790, or the AW Area 51. The whole updateing the GPU capability is the main reason AW is still in the running.

K first of all I would highly recommend not getting the dell. For one their shipping takes forever. 2. when you get the computer you will most likely have problems. 3. theyre ugly as heck! (thats my opinion.) Now I've never purchased a sager so im not sure on that one.

Alienware aint' exactly the fastest kid on the block. I agree with you on the ugly part, though.

Crusader, not trying to trollin the AW forums, but not everyone has problems with the i9100 and iXPS machines. Yes, they are large helicopter landing platforms, but they run VERY well. Also, the shipping times have come down to normal. The original 4-6 week times were due to engineering problems involving bad ATI 9700 units.

I like AW, and I will probably buy an AW desktop this next winter, but please try not to knock the Dell so bad. They got some bad publicity out of the gate when the first machines had problems, but many of them have been resolved and many of us have no problems whatsoever with heavy use. I have had my 9100 for about 6-7 weeks now, and I am extremely happy with it and have not had a single problem yet. Also, I got the configuration listed in my signature for $1350 shipped, and that's tough to beat.

Keep in mind, no machine will ever be totally problem free, and I know AW has had problems with their machines before. I, for one, MoeyKFA should definitly look into a Dell i9100 or iXPS before he makes his decision. Better to cover all your bases before you drop a large amount of money like that.

I have nothing against dell, as i was debating over an xps or area-51m for a long time. I even almost got the xps but then financial situation changed and i could get the area-51m. my thing is that the xps is a big slab, where the area-51m has some nice curves. plus, the xps looks quite ugly, where as the area-51m has some nice colour options (and light up eyes! what more can you need!?). if the xps was considerably better, i would have gotten it, but it wasen't, so i didn't.

That's understandable, but you should include that next time so people don't think you're coming out of left field. And to contrast that statement, my office uses Dell desktops and they have been on 24/7 since being installed about 6 months ago and I have yet to see more than 1 require any service. That's a good track record if you ask me.

I think it's just important to remember that no matter what PC you buy, you run the risk of getting a lemon. I have seen a lot of posts on these forums of people who end up with bad Sager laptops, bad AW laptops and bad Dell laptops, but to be quite frank - $#!t happens. Honestly, after reading this forum for the last 2.5 months, I have yet to see any one brand stand out as a bad buy or one with more failures than another.

Don't count out the Dell. It's not the most attractive laptop (I concede that as I know it's not really a looker), but it is a very powerful and very reliable machine IMO.

what is is that would cause half life to run better on ati, and nvidia to run better with doom? this really sounds interesting.
Not really. It's just that doom3 is being done in cooperation with Nvidia. And hl2 is with ati. That's all he means. Both will be able to handle the other game.
Yeah.. it's just all the sponsorship. [Sponsorship = cash under the table.]
yeah, why do you think they have the HL2 coupons with the 9700?

Trust me, AW had problems when they first released the A51m2(766)... I purchased in September '03 and after multiple depots I had a working machine in January '04. I'm looking forward to replacing the awful Nvidia 5600 card with the ATI
