I'm an Idiot....Help!

Thread Starter
I just got my new 8600 today, I had returned a refurb one I had purchased due to quite a few problems I had with it. The refurb one had an XGA screen and a 32 MB Graphics Card, which I wished the laptop had better resolution; so on the new 8600 I ordered it with a SXGA screen and a 64 MB card.

This is where the idiot part comes in, I had read some people found the text to be to small with this screen; but I had no idea it would be this small. I play on a site called Pogo, and no matter what I try the games load there with both the game and chat sections so small that I'm unable to play or chat.

I thought I had pretty good eyesight, but you must have to have perfect 20/20 to be able to cope with the text sizes on this type of screen, I'm guessing the text would look the same on any brand SXGA screen, correct me if I am wrong. I got "blessed" with a Helltachi screen, which also has considerable leakage and etc.. Which finally leads me to my question. With a 64 MB Graphics Card and a XGA screen, the the higher MB card wouldn't effect the text size on a XGA screen would it? The past two laptops have been my first experience with the 15.4 screens. Thanks for any help in advance.

Maybe "I" am an idiot but dude just turn down your res.

Nah dude, the graphics memory has nothing to do with the text size. Return it for a 64mb XGA if you want, the text will be as it was on your refurb.

I had the same problem with my sxga lcd. Try this:

Give it a couple hours, you'll get used to it.

Nice listing, vorik. I'm currently experimenting with my desktop 19" monitor at higher res to see what will scale up with higher font settings.

I want an SXGA too but I fear I will have the same problems as Rowan........and I wear glasses!
My experience, I got glasses also, I got the wxga screen and its working out great, but i have seen the wsxga and it is not that bad once you sit down in front of it for while.

I too have glasses... I think the SXGA+ res is awesome. I haven't found the fonts too small at all. I think you should experiment with the computer a bit more. Do some surfing open a few windows at the same time. You will enjoy having the extra real estate the SXGA+ screen gives you.

However, if you have a screen with a lot of light leakage return it.

You want small you should see the WUXGA
I am loving my WSXGA too, it may take you a couple of days to get used to it, but once you do there is no looking back... I can't stand my Desktop @ 1024x 768 any more, its so small and ugly by comparison.

I swear to the lord him/herself I am the only one who likes the WUXGA. I'm starting a fanclub. We will call it Horrible Eyes ADmire All lCd's Having Enormous resolutionS or H.E.A.D.A.C.H.E.S.

I'm in a definite minority, but I really like the XGA. I'm trying to avoid reading glasses and both the sxga and the uxga give me headaches. Plus I don't like having to fiddle with all the settings to enlarge text size, but then cope with websites looking distorted.

Sign me up! I like mine also - not 1 dead pixel.

I don't understand all these gamers complaining about not being able to use their Hibachis.

Ok I applied the settings v0rIk recommended, even with my glasses; I couldn't get used to it. I finally had to get off about a hour and a half later, I got extremely nauseated and my head started to hurt trying to strain to see the
type and such on the screen. Even with the settings mentioned applied, it did nothing for the size of the game and chat area for the Pogo games. I'm still feeling a bit sick to my stomach now.

I think a XGA screen is in my future, I just can't handle what straining to see the print and other things on the SXGA. At least I know now for sure it's not for me.
Thanks for your help, I'm glad some of you can deal with this type and the UXGA types of screens.
Hopefully 3rd time will be the charm, but with dell one can only hope.

I forgot to add, just for the record I am a dudette, and yes I do like the emoticons.

I'm thinking of trying to sell my current 8600 on ebay, could use the money. If I understand correctly, the extended warranty could be transfered to somebody else. I got a pretty good deal, and figure I could get a little bit more than I paid for it.

I guess we should have deduced this from the pretty text

If you are still within your return period you could also do that. I don't know how much you could make reselling it, and it may not be worth the hassle.

hi dudette

is your problem with the text size in gneral windows or in apps

have you considered going to "display properties", "appearance", "font size"

you have three options: normal, large, extra large

in ie you can pick: "view", "text size" then you have 5 sizes to choose from.

most other apps provide some control.

there is some advantage with hi res if you get large hi res photos etc or play some hi res games or like me, you are a cad guy (guyette??)

i have a little xps with big res and love it but my interest may be different

regards

You guys are lucky. I'm sitting here in front of a great 17" Samsung CRT moniter, and my parents won't let me change the resolution from 800x600. I think they are going blind.
im here on my desktop and i can put my res all the way up to 1600x1200 19' Nec Monitor. but i have it at 1200x1024.
