Hey Rowan
I live next door to you over here in Alliebama.
It took me a couple of days to get used to the screen but I love it now.

Sign me up too. Took me a day and a half of futzing with settings and adjusting my eyeballs, but I LOVE the WUXGA now.

You should use it at the higher res and just change it back when you're finished... only takes a second

I'm a dudette too--nice to know there are 2 of us.

Again, I'll tell you that I LOVE the XGA, unlike all the "guys" here.
When I look at my colleague's UXGA for any time at all I get a severe migraine--it's been that way for a long time, so I don't think I'd ever get used to it. For my purposes, the XGA is perfect.

My 16 yr old son says I'm completely nuts

For the record I also love my XGA screen. No issues, dead pixels at all!! I guess if I were more into gaming than I may not like the XGA but for me it is great! I just wish the Memory and the wireless card wouldn't get so hot so dam quick!!!

Now I really feel like an idiot. After reinstalling XP to get rid of all the dell junk they put on, then went to the Display Properties and under settings I changed the display resolution to 1280 x 800; feel so stupid the answer was right in front of me and I didn't even see it. Now I have a problem that is new to me, since reinstalling XP when I turn the laptop on I get this screen asking me which OS I want to use; both choices are XP Home Version. How do I get that to quit happening? Also when I try to turn the thing off or reboot, that box pops up where you have to end a process by clicking end. The file that it states won't close is called Sample

Rowan,

There are a few steps to getting rid of the extra XP Home option.

1) In Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder options. Open the View tab, and turn on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option.

2) Now, if you go to the C:\ directory, there should be a file called Boot.INI. Open this file in Windows Notepad.

3) This file tells Windows which operating system you want to run. You really only have one copy installed, but it thinks you have two. At the bottom of the file, you will see two listings of the OS - just delete the bottom one.

4) Save the file, then reboot Windows. Should do it.

Don't I wish.

Everybody's eyeballs are different and no amount of 'getting used to' is going get rid of eye strain if you can't see well.

I'm stuggling with the choice myself. I really HATE the way photos look on XGA but wear glass and worry about SXGA being to hard to read.......even with adjustments.

I'm currently experimenting with increased resolution on my CTR monitor to see what programs are scalable and what the effects of increasing the system font size (DPI). It DOES take getting used to and lots of things go wonky when you move away from native resolution. Since I wear glasses AND want a hi res for photographs, finding a happy medium is truly difficult.

Like you Rowan, I can barely play an online game anymore because it's too small.

WEll Rowan u can have this problem id when u reinstalled XP u forgot to delete the one u first had installed. my suggestion to u is to do the whole thing again (because if u didnt uninstall the first one or Formated the Drive the other XP that Dell install can still be in ur system taking up space.) Make sure u format the Drive when it ask you to. and then everything should be good for there on. or u can just do what Kevda (but keep in mind if u didnt format the first time u installed it the other XP that dell installed can still be in ur HDD taking up Space)

rowan

when you reinstalled the ops sys did you repartition the drive.
if not you may find the machine accessing a partition with some evidence of a second op sys.

i think a clean install wud actually include a repartition of the drive

The suggestion that Kev posted worked, and have not had that message at the startup again.

This is all I did when I installed XP and encountered the problem I had mentioned before. I went into the BIOS and changed the boot sequence so that the CD-ROM was my primary boot device, when it got to the appropriate screen I deleted all the partitions and selected the unaprtitioned space to create the fresh copy of XP on. Then I chose NTFS, not the quick version but the regular one and then proceeded to go on with the install.
