Anyone try this with Hitachi screen?

Well i called Dell since I got one of the Hitachi screens and it had pretty bad light leakage. I called them when I was at work and did not have the laptop in front of me but I pretended like I did because I was wanting to just send it back anyway. The India tech told me a few things to try and I pretended they didn't work. when I got home I tried the first thing he told me to do and it appears that it has fixed the problem. I did not have a lot of time to test it out but it looks like the light leakage is gone. I wanted to pass this info on for those that have the problem.

!. unplug AC power.
2. take battery out
3. Hold the power button down for at least 20 seconds.
4 replace battery and AC if you want.
5 boot up and see the difference.

I dont know if this has been posted or not b4 or if it has been tried and not worked but it looks like I may not have to send in my laptop for repair. Let me know if this helps, or if its a repost.

Shep

THe other step they told me to do which I didnt do since it appears to have worked was....to turn off laptop and hold the function button down for 20 seconds. And while still holding it down turn the power on. Just as it is starting to boot up let go of function button.

Looks like the idea is to make sure that there is no charge in the system at all. Interesting. Maybe the transistors in the screen build up a charge over time?

You know, to be fair, I'll give it a shot when I get home later today.
I'll let you know

I cant believe it worked?!? How the heck does taking out the battery and holding down the power button make such a big diffrence. I mean I was dealing with the light leakage (Only bugged me watching DVD's) but it is almost gone now. Thanks for the tip... I will pass that one along.

OMG it worked, awesome thanks!

wait..wait..wait!

What if I don't want to replace the battery and AC?

Step 4 says it's optional.

I believe we have a smart donkey on our hands now.

Seriously though...

If the fix was as simple as discharging a circuit upon shutdown after n hours in use, then it would not be difficult build this into the bios/machine.

To have to perform the described procedure every month or 2 or 3 (depending upon the machine and usage) seems a bit silly.

What if the procedure was never performed? Would the circuit cook itself over time and fail? Even more scary - Is it an electrical hazzard just waiting to happen?

So this is actually fixing the light leakage problem for many of you? I have one of the newer Hitachi's with VERY little leakage to start with, but I'm gonna try this when I get home and see if it makes it even less. Very cool when there is a fix like this.

I wouldn't think it would create a hazardous situation, but I guess it could cause damage to some components ( maybe a capacitor holding a charge) if left for a long period of time (months?).

Ok - I was skeptical.

I unpacked the Dell laptop (9100 / WSXGA+ / Hitachi) that was going back to Dell whenever I get a replacement...

And I used my wife as my control.

She said that's it's MUCH less (in other words, less light leakage).
And I'm definitely apt to agree with her.

It's not perfect - BUT it's a machine that I could probably get used to.

I'll see what Dell ships me as a replaicement (IF they ship a replacement) - if they do, kool. If they don't, I'm probably going to keep this one.

But, regardless, THANK YOU for the wonderful fix for this. I just want to know why 4 other techs and customer support reps NEVER heard of this EASY fix.

DAve.

WEll I got home after i posted this and it was back and seems to progressivly get back to the same bad light leakage. I have not done it again yet. I was surprised to see that it had worked for others as well. I thought I must have been to tired the other night when I did it the first time and was just seeing things. Maybe I will give the holding of the function button a try too. Keep posting results. I just missed the Airborn Express guy today that was supposed to be dropping me off a box to ship my 9100 back to Dell. Will have to wait until Tuesday now b4 I can send it in. I am going to put big notes in the box saying I WANT A NEW SCREEN AND IT BETTER NOT BE A HITACHI!!!!!

Tried it... No real difference. Maybe slightly, MAYBE. I can say that my Blue Bluetooth Card LED light isn't on anymore though. WTF...

Ho hum... replacement has been shipped and should be here early next week. FINGERS TOES CROSSED!!
Did you get the Blue Led working again SD??
Yup. I took the battery out and then reconnected the Bluetooth card. Working fine now... or at least the LED is on. I don't have a bluetooth device to test it with yet.

GOD... I am praying this next machine is okay.

9100 On ORDER

Well I just ordered a 9100 , and have been reading about some issues with it.
However most of the issues seem to have been right around production time. Hopefully being June 1st all the problems have been resolved and I get a good 9100 notebook. Not to mention IM praying for a good screen. I guess we'll see in 10 days.. THats if I get it within 10 days. I shall report back.
Anyone that has purchased a 9100 in the last couple of weeks report back and let US know how things are going.
