Looking for advice on ABS Mayhem or another notebook for school and gaming - Page 2

fact is that for gaming, it will always be the graphics chip that slows things down more than anything else

by the time more than 512 is needed, or a faster processor, the graphics chip will already be too slow

certainly though, as you said, more ram can speed up the time it takes to switch between programs

Well along time ago when I was beta testing Planetside 1gb of RAM was essential... Not sure about the game now never bought it but anyone without 1gb had to restart their comps after about 1-2 hours of playing. Who knows maybe there was a mad crazy memory leak but for sure that game needed the extra RAM. Otherwise haveing 1gb of RAM in a laptop doesn't seem to be necessary to me(of course I have 1gb in my desktop) and I just plan on getting 1 stick of 512 for my Mitac 8050 and then I can add in another 512 later.

Hey I am going to Purdue in the fall too as a transfer student , what major is has he selected? Anyway I went with the M5:6 from powernotebooks.com for my Purdue notebook, just tested the battery life last night. For word processing and internet based stuff (basically what you will be doing a in lecture) I got 4 hours and a few minutes of life out of the sucker. Other laptops I was considering were the C 3:17 (AKA the M6N), and the W1.

If your son needs the best graphics card than the cl56 is the way to go, if he wants the most mobility and best battery life than the m6n is the way to go.

Is the screen issue a problem with the cl56?
well it is unevenly lit, if you get a black screen with the computer on the top is black but the bottom looks a purpulish color. Its form the light leaking from the bottom

thanks, any known screen or keyboard issues with the M6N or Mitac 8050?
with the asus no keyboard issue, there is a screen issue with the 15.1 inch version with the lighting but it is alot more mild, the 15.4 inch screen is flawless. and i have no idea about the other lappy.

Well I live in New York...so if your son received his assignment on Friday I should be getting mine tomorrow or Wednesday (assuming you guys live in Indiana). And he is lucky shreeve is nice hall. I am very curious to see where I got stuck.

As for FFXI he will be able to play that game on any of the 3 PCs you mentioned. In my previous college they provided us with laptops for the time you were there (or if you graduated you could keep it), the laptop they gave us was a 1.6 Pentium M, 512 RAM, 60 GB 5400 RPM HDD, 32 MB Radeon 9000. And I could play FFXI on that with decent framerates...just had to lower the visual quality slightly.

I am saying nothing negative about the CL56 because I have never seen one. I have seen an ASUS M6N and it was VERY nice, and it was the 15.1 (supposedly with gradient issue, this one did not have a problem). I added the Mitac 8050 for almost no reason at all, just because it has the 9700 and looks cute, and I don't really need a 9700.
Anyhow, my FINALISTS are:
1.) ASUS M6N 15.4
2.) Mitac 8050 15.4
3.) HP nc8000 (128MB 9600) 15"
4.) IBM T42 15" with 64MB 9600
Any opinions, pros and cons from anyone I have not already heard from GREATLY appreciated. I need to pick a notebook, or blow myself away, one of the two!

hmmmm 8.5 hour battery life, and like yo usaid yourself the build quality is amazing, the one you saw was it the 15.4 inch model, if so is the screen beatiful even with the wxga res?
So, are you getting the 15.4"???
The one I saw was NOT the 15.4, it was the 15.1. Sounds like you are gung-ho for an M6Ne, the 9700 is not critical for me.
I said the M6N I saw was "VERY nice", but I am comparing build quality to the HP (which I have seen), the IBM T42 15" which I have NOT seen and the Mitac 8050 which I have all but blown off. In fact, lets just say forget the Mitac.
So, the M6N or M6Ne (doesn't matter) the HP nc8000 or the IBM T42 with 15" FlexView. Having seen the HP, it has an extremely high build quality, but is a little thick and clunky/klutzy for me.
So, that would leave the M6N or the T42.
IBM is supposed to have the very best build quality period, so it is very difficult to blow it off when I have never seen one. The only negative I know for the IBM is that it has no firewire, but I can do that with a PCMCIA.
So....

We're in Illinois and sent the deposit in very early, February. Was Shreve your first choice? Let me know where they put you.

Just curious, why forget about the Mitac 8050? Did you hear something about the system?
IN July you can get a Mayhem G3. It's gonna have an AMD 64 processor. Heres the link to the config page, but you cant access this page through their website yet, so this really only way.

No, the problem is that I have not heard enough about the system. Just note enough information. Yes, I know it has been sold as a Voodoo model, supposedly without problems, but I just don't know anything about Mitac or the model 8050. The review site for the Voodoo model someone sent me to had one review about a page long that said nothing other than it was "awesome". I really need more information than that to spend $2,000 on an item. I don't really want to be on the "bleeding edge" of new model introductions. If people know great things about the 8050, other than the fact that it has a 9700, PLEASE tell me now. I know people are waiting for the hypersonic model.
