Looking for advice on ABS Mayhem or another notebook for school and gaming - Page 4

The ACER 2025 looks nice. Let's keep in mind that it does cost a bit more, but does have a DVD burner as well. I don't want to rain on your parade. If you want the IBM, go for it. It may be that the screen is just fine. However, I posted the question on thinkpad forums, asking if someone could find the specs on the Dell Ultrasharp and post its response time. If it is way, way faster, then I think that, anyway you slice it, there would be a problem with the Flexview. If it really is comparibly as slow, then we probably would be fine, and I will order one as well.
PLEASE KEEP IN TOUCH!!

I wasnt aware that conmee returned his flexview though, i am really hesitant on this... i really WANT an IBM, but i would pe pretty unhappy with a slow screen.

I saw the specs on the dell screens, let me dig for them.

Here. http://members.cox.net/topskillz/X1000.htm

The dells are supposed to use the samsung screens (some sxga+ 8600's have the pos Hitachi though)

"DELL-Machina, as optimistic as your observations are, I think they're still a bit misleading. If you go over to the Dell Inspiron Video forums, you will see that many users have compared the Samsung and Hitachi LCD's side by side and concluded that the Samsung is MUCH better. I had a Hitachi myself and had to return it for that and numerous other issues; that thing does not have a 35ms response time. BTW, in comparison to my roommate's Compaq x1000, I would say that the x1000's screen is quite a bit better than the Hitachi screen. "

Quote from known screen issues thread, the dell sxga screen is listed with a 35ms refresh but it does not indeed have this refresh rate, this is y you can get your screen replaced because the info is misleading.....i cant seeem to find the actual refresh rate for the screen.

Are you sure that is the Dell Ultrasharp? I thought the Ultrasharp was an UXGA, but I guess it also is the SXGA+ ??
35ms is not all that fast, but we are talking 60 (or more) unless the specs on the Thinkpad forum are wrong, which would be great, or unless 60+ms is normal and fine???
As for the ASUS M6N, does anyone have any idea who is the manufacturer of the panel in it? Is it the same manufacturer for the 15" and the 15.4" widescreen??
Anyone know what the approximate specs are of them???

The 3rd samsung screen is the wuxga.

Well, my son has the WUXGA Dell Ultrasharp on a last year's Inspiron 8200. Even though Dell would not be my first choice, his notebook has a REALLY nice screen, definately not slow for gaming, etc.

Quite a bit of misinformation on Dell's screens here, so a couple of corrections are in order.

Dell uses screens from Hitachi, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba.

All Dell's UltraSharp wide screens (WXGA, WSXGA+, WUXGA) should have the response time of 35 ms or better, according to Dell's specifications.

The infameous "screen issue" concerned earlier versions of Hitachi's WSXGA+, which didn't meet the specification of 35 ms. According to users' reports, the latest revisions of Hitachi's screens being shipped now do not exhibit ghosting, so apparently the "screen issue" has been resolved.

Note that nowadays all Dell's wide screens are UltraSharp. For Inspiron 8200, UltraSharp was the more expensive option available with UXGA (and of course aamsel's son can't have a wide screen on I8200).

You are correct.
So, some of Dell's screens are better than 35ms?
In that case, I assume it would be safe to say that a new IBM Thinkpad with Flexview SXGA+ and a response time of at least 60ms would be really bad, even if it has newer IPS technology??
Or, has anyone seen a newer Flexview here, and not found it to be slow or to ghost??

aamsel:

Yes, some of Dell's screens may be better than others, but all of them should fall within 35 ms.

If IBM specifies 60 ms for FlexView SXGA+, slower screens are considered defective and should be replaced by IBM. However, IBM may in fact ship screens with varying response times. So even if you saw a couple of users' reports about receiving faster screens, this needn't give you any meaningful assurance about what you will get.

In practical terms, IBM's loose specification may be convenient for IBM, but it's ridiculous by the common industry standards.

Since I can't follow all threads on this sub-forum, I wonder what scared you away from HP's nw8000.

Price, mainly, they are more money than even IBM feature for feature.

I agree on the n8000, very nice machine, but the price is just way too high for the features.

Well, I told you about my nice deal for Dell's M60. Even with your horrible Dell's experience, you try one, since you could return it if it didn't meet your requirements.
Yes, I saw one at work (where I work we have NOTHING but Dell servers, workstations, and notebooks. I used to be a huge Dell proponent, but don't think that I want to try again right now. Also, I REALLY hate to buy off the web and return for refunds.

Where did you previously go to school? The Hilltop apts look nice, and I don't think you need to purchase a meal plan, always a plus, lol. When do you register? We go on the 18th.

I am currently going for registration on the 22nd, and I am still taking a meal plan...because I just don't foresee myself cooking too much. I might take do breakfast in the room...because I am the master cereal chef !

I previously went to school at Stevens Tech, 3:1 male to female ratio.
