when you're trying to do some netstumbling on wifi systems 1/2 mile away you need the external. Trust me, the Proxim can go toe to toe with the linksys without the external antenna.

It's just nice to have the option should I want to do something amusing (such as the time I connected to a WiFi system on the other end of campus since my university's computer service department couldn't figure out how to get it working in the library... range was about 1000 yards... try that with a Linksys)

Woah, I guess you're right. But ya know most people aren't gonna need a half mile reciever unless you're stealing other people's internet

netstumbling is not a crime

And if you have an apt close to your college campus then it's a nice little investment. That said, Federal Law is rather clear on this... if the Wifi signal is NOT encrypted, then it's fair game.

Woah, I never knew that. Thats nifty

if you think THAT is fun... use the antenna and connect it to a compatible video adapter... some of the things people do in front of the cameras when they think that no one is looking

For some reason people don't realize that the 2.4Ghz frequencies for video transmission aren't licensed... or encrypted.

Haha I would have never thought to do that.

On another note: Dude, you're sick an twisted

Yeah, most people don't think about stuff like that... traffic cams, office security, prisions, even some telecast signals from the local news.

Now how am I stick and twisted? It's a simple security observation and exploitation.

I thought you were implying that you you were doing some naughty things with that camera

I'd say a linksys b/g wireless card + linksys b/g routher (i'm using the b's)

an alienware backpack (it can be stuffed rather nicely)

and the antec cooler, though not needed, it cools the system a bit and looks pretty nice.

Okies... that would be the difference between DarthBevis and myself

As for the Antec cooler... the Bytecc is cheaper, looks almost as nice, but the fans are more powerful and the system works better. I like the Antec, but the Bytecc is the better bang for the buck IMHO.

So, how did you get that setup to actually work Yoda? Just slap that antenna on your adapter and you can pickup signals?
which setup, the video or wifi?

Wifi = attach either 9 Dbi mobile antenna to top of car, attach pigtail to card (through compatible mc port) and run netstumbler.

Video = use 27Dbi directional antenna (though I also have a mobile version now) and connect the pigtail to a compatible video adapter.

Man, that video setup is the shiznit. lol

I recommend either one of the two for people interested in wirless communication

I'm so excited and I just cant hide it.....

I called up today to pester alienware again about the 9700 being on limited availability. The website has the 9700 as regular shipping status as of about a week ago but when I called then about it they said the website was wrong.

So I called again today to get the same answer, only this time I asked him to check with his supervisor. Josh did and to my surprise came back to say that the 9700 has reached regular shipping status.. I was very excited, I then changed it over as I read a hexus.net review the other day of the ati 9600 vs the nvidia 5700 on a aw laptop, anyhow the testing showed some rather poor performance in pixel shader 2 games, pretty much all the games I currently played, even the aging 9600 held its ground in px2, so I'm glad to have the 9700 as it should fare better against my far cry and hopefully even upcoming half life 2.

So enough of the blabbering... if your system is still in production and you wanted a 9700 but couldnt wait 5 weeks? Go, Call now and get it changed.. its only 18 bucks!
