Remove battery when plugged in?

Thread Starter
When plugged into an electrical outlet, is it OK and desirable to remove the battery when it becomes fully recharged? Put another way, is there anything bad about running off an electrical outlet for several hours when the battery is completely recharged? Or, is it better to unplug and use the battery when it's fully recharged? In case there are laptop-specific answers to these questions, I have an IBM X40. (This is my third laptop and I've never known the answer to these questions. I'm asking for another long-time user who also would like to know.)

I too am very interested in this, also is it better to drain it down to 5% once in a while rather than top it off every time.

When I got my PowerPro M5:6 from powernotebooks I also was curious about this...and the tech I spoke to said to never remove the battery while on AC power. He said the battery helps to smooth out voltages and such, and that removing it while on AC power increases your systems chance of going thru a power surge (which isn't good for the notebook).

As for recharge habbits to maximize battery life, he said I could do whatever I wanted as long as I fully drained the battey once every week. He recommended doing this by entering the BIOS and just leaving it there until it shuts off (as the BIOS has no advanced power management features like windows XP).

that definatly answers my question, my dilema isnt really battery life persay but battery capacity over extended time. I dont want to be left with a 2 hour battery after a year.

Anyone disagree with full drainage once a week? Maybe I should start doing it because my usage is totally random.

it isn't neccessary. Batteries these days dont need to be pampered. No one's preventing you, but honestly I dont see it helping at all.

I've had my laptop for 2 weeks, you don't need to drain it at all, or do anything it, I just started it up out of the box, used it for about 30 minutes, plugged it into the wall after, used it normally, and I'm still getting 4+ hours of battery life. No need to pamper your batteries, like Tourney said. Maybe back in the day you did, but with this technology, you don't need to.
