Well, since YOU asked.........
Hell no I haven't ordered a damn thing yet!!
Also, the Monday I spoke of was quite a few Mondays ago, so I (apparently) did not self-impose the decide-by-Monday-or-die rule at all.
Unfortunately, it was just a guess that I could live with 15" SXGA+.
I was never actually able to see one ANYWHERE.
I saw a 16" SONY with SXGA+, and I saw several 14.1" SONY's with SXGA+ but that was as close as I got, and I don't like the SONY XBrite at all, as I have said many times. (the 14.1 SONY was a 505 series, NOT an XBrite.)
Actually, I DID see an Austin notebookforum member's 15.1" SXGA+ ASUS M6N a few months ago. She was running it non-native at 1024 X 768 and it looked ok. To be honest, I did not properly examine it.
Her login was: phairest and she got it from rjtech, but she has not posted here in a long time.
The biggest problem I have is eyesight. It sucks!!!
With my desktop LCD, I am fine (right now) from a little more than an arm's-length with no glasses, and it is hard to be more than an arm's length from a notebook for OBVIOUS reasons (kinda hard to type when you can't reach the keyboard!!!)
With glasses, I have about a 1 foot range of clarity, which also sucks. I intend to get some more effective glasses of some type this summer.
So, I have blown off SXGA+ once and for all. (If you want SXGA+ on a 15" your best bet, if you are not a heavy gamer, would be the IBM T42 with Flexview. Yes, it is a slow screen).
So vision, for me, has been the biggest issue, much, much, much more of a problem than choosing the right notebook.
I am choosing (really and truly) between two choices that I already was down to earlier...The HP nc6000 14.1" XGA and the HP zt3000/Compaq x1000/Compaq nx7010 (3 notebooks that are about the same) 15.4" WXGA.
NO HIGH RESOLUTION, FINAL ANSWER!!
I lean towards the nc6000 although the zt3000 has its true advantages. The main advantage would be the wider viewing angles of the 15.4" WXGA, but I don't know how bad lesser viewing angles would be on a 14.1" XGA????
I really would prefer to buy a notebook that has a little more panache than one of the two HP's I am down to. The ASUS M6N series and the Mitac 8050 both come close to having that certain flair, but they seem to come up a pinch short, and/or have some issues of their own. Maybe there is a low-res model out there somewhere that I overlooked, I have no idea.
Kinda sucks that I went out looking (ages ago) for a Dell replacement, and managed to only come up with two HP's.
The laptop world just ain't a perfect one!!!

Just curious--regarding the SXGA. I agree with choosing the 15 inch over the 14.1. In fact, I decided that was a criteria for me regardless of XGA or SXGA. What I'm curious is -- where did you find SXGAs that you could deal with? The HPs I've seen (at Best Buy and Circuit City) are all XGA or WXGA. Like you, I don't dig widescreen (except for my future home entertainment movie room, of course, but that's much bigger and a whole other story). Also, I haven't even found IBMs to look at anywhere -- not even Office Depot.
See how it is. I thought I'd made my decision yesterday, yet here I am still thinking and looking. Really, if it wasn't for the SXGA, I'd have ordered the M6N already, but alas, no one seems to be able to offer it with an XGA (non widescreen).
BTW, there could be two dead forum members come sunrise. I think I'm imposing the decide-by-Monday-or-die rule, too. LOL. Let me know what you end up. I'll let you know how mine goes, too. Double-suicide?
