MP3 Player... Batteries die...

It trivial... but can any one confirm (or explain) why and if it is suppose to... why the batteries (AAA's) die when the unit is left (turned off BUT) inserted into my 8890. The obvious solution I know is to leave it out when not actually transfer to it but it is a convenient place to leave it...
Side Note: Batteries flat in player... player inserted... will hault system boot up (this is how I find out that I've forgotten to remove it and batteries are now dead )

It looks like it is consuming battery power while inside the laptop. I wonder if it will charge rechargable batteries, then? Could non-rechargable batteries expire if submitted to a recharger, then? Have you tried using a recharable batteries for curiousity's sake?

I have an 8790, so I cannot try that idea, though I was curious.

Kaine,

No haven't tried nicads... I have some so will try it... but suspect it will do the same.
But it can't hurt to try... what's the worst that will happen, just have to recharge them I suppose.

The player does not require battery power at all when connected via the internal bay (ie, for transfers to and from the solid state SD card); ergo, the wiser option would be to remove the batteries altogether.

I just switched to rechargeables in my 8887 MP3. RayOVac 4Xs. They and the 15-minute speed-charger are expensive little devils, but hopefully less trouble than buying cases of batteries to throw away. I'll let you know how they last after a road test.

Just a quick note to say that my batteries also go dead (8890's MP3 player) while in the laptop...which is very annoying. Finding AAA batteries while on the road can be very annoying, specially in eastern europe...

That's a long road test to wait for the rechargable result... Somehow, I don't think it will matter whether it is rechargable or not, but it was worth the shot.

Did you go from Colorado to the east coast for the road test? Now that's what I call dedication to your Sager. (smirk)

Marty,
In a way I'm glad to hear your hav'n the same problem... At least it might be a normal querk of the unit...
This MP3 is the second one I've had... the 1st was DOA... And since I live in OZ it's a little hard for easy return (even if I do goto the USA (CA) regularly).
Looking forward to the road trip report... the Nicads I thought I had I didn't and havn't had a chance to buy any...
