LG Laptops

Thread Starter
Just shopping for a laptop and the LG ones seem fairly good value expecially the "LG LM50-2 (Centrino 1.5/40G/256 RAM/Combo/15 XGA/XPH)" for $2049 Aussie dollars. I have been searching the net and cannot find much information on them and any reviews. Just wondering if anyone here has one or used one and what they are like. Any comments or information would be appreciated. Thankyou

Does Anyone Own an LG LM50-3 (aka IBMLG XNOTE)

Anyway, there's a guy on the x1000 forums who has (or had one) one. He seems to like it a lot.

(I think you need to register to read those links.)

Here's a ton of nice pics, if you haven't seen them already:

It's too bad this one will probably never make it to the US. The Taiwanese manufacturers are finally shipping a decent range of relatively thin Pentium-M/MR9600/9700 machines to choose from, but the Xnote would be one of my top choices if it was available here.

Wow that's the same price roughly as the Z1. IF taht was availabe here it'd be a WAY better buy.

Xnote is quite popular in Russia; quite a few reviews there (if you can handle the Cyrillic!).

is that by ibm?

will that ever be available here? if so, when?

It's by LG IBM, which is basically a Korean company in a joint venture with IBM (I assume).

It seems unlikely that IBM will sell that here. If you do a search, you can find a story on IBM offering colors for Thinkpads by the end of this year. There is also vague mention of the possibility of IBM offering different models in the future, such as those by LG IGM. The problem is, they have different strategies for different markets around the world. IBM doesn't seem to want to dilute it's Thinkpad brand in the US.

Excellen't thanks for the info guys, pitty most of the info and stuff on them is in languages other than English, ahh well.

I am somewhat confused in what the differences are between the LM and LS series and the hundreds (im exaggerating) of models to choose from, as seen on the LGIBM Korea website. If anyone can explain this it would be great.

Looks like I may be getting one soon as from what I have seen they seem to be ok.

Thanks

my understanding is that these will be released (in Canada at least) June 15th. A local store here has them listed for that "ETA". LM50 is their top line model, with a 15" screen. LM40 is much of the same, except with a radeon 9200 and a 14" screen. The LS50 has a 15" screen, but lower specs than the LM series. It is also heavier. The other models they offer in Canada are tablet PCs or hybrids. I was looking into LG before I saw the Acer Ferrari, the LGs seem to be pretty over priced ($3300 canadian for an LM50 with a radeon 9600). Hope that clears it up for you, happy shopping!

Wow, that's a promising sign that they might make it to the US. Too bad they aren't offering the LM50a (with the Radeon 9700) which has been out in Korea a while. I wonder what the screens are like (especially horizontal/vertical viewing angles and brightness)?

If any of you see one in person or end up buying one, please post your impressions.

Yeah well you know LG lies about their battery life....10 hours on a 9 cell...the was probably benchmarked with the monitor off and idle lol..

Just had a look at one of these LG (Aka Xnote) babies down at my local Harvey Norman store here in Oz they had both the LS 50-3 and LS 50-4. Only the LS3 was turned on so i couldn't get a look at the LS4 SXGA screen but the LS3 looked pretty good. Both models are identical in physical appearance and are very light and thin. So here is the low down.

Good

Light, thin, apparently good battery life, feels good.

Bad

Screen looked a bit frosty (but this could have been because of the display settings?)

Placement of ports, (usb ports are on the left side, and at the front also parallel port is on the left side in the middle, cardbus on right at front) Just seems weird to have these ports in these places as, for me i think it would be very annoying. Personal preference i suppose. I think the reason for this may have something to do with the battery as part of the battery takes up most of the back pannel. S-Video is the only port on the back i think.

Ok well thats it for now, if i think of anything else in the mean time, i'll update.
This laptop is still on my "to buy" list so nothing overly bad found out about the lg laptops so far. LM 50 - 2 seems the best value for money atm.

Hope this helps for interested people.

Thanks for the first-hand impressions. Good luck with your search and let us know what you end up choosing.

*sigh* I wish they'd sell it here in the US...
they sell in Canada =)
i'm sure US is soon
Not necessarily, since the US market is much more competitive. BTW, LG is making a big push into the European markets, with lots of ads in newspapers, magazines, etc.
yeah, too bad I could only get it if it comes out in the next two months which I doubt.
so get it tomorrow from canada.. i think they ship to US. and you're dollar is not too bad
