600m Ordered, review to follow

Ordered a 600m here in Australia today. Will post my review shortly after i receive it. I ordered the following for AU$3200:

Intel Pentium M 735 (1.7 GHz Dothan) CPU
768 MB RAM
14 inch SXGA screen
64MB Radeon 9000
60 GB hard drive
CDRW/DVD
Intel 2200 B/G wireless
Dell TrueMobile integrated Bluetooth module (to use with a wireless bluetooth mouse!)
Red Lava color kit :P
3 yrs accidental damage full cover warranty

The web price was $3500 so they lowered it a fair bit ($300 to $3200) over the phone, plus threw in a free 64MB USB memory stick and upgraded the 3yr warranty to include accidental damage cover.

I'm hoping it all arrives in one piece and they include everything! :/

By the way, the reasons i ended up deciding on Dell over IBM are:

IBM never seemed interested in selling to me, giving me basic information etc. They didn't return my call when i left a message. Their models are all out of date now except the T42s which won't even be in stock for another 4 - 6 weeks apparently. Also i found their web site very confusing compared to Dell's simple, easy to understand and intuitive interface. There were only a couple IBM's with the SXGA screen, so my choices with them were severly limited from the get go.

On my first call to Dell to make an inquiry they immediately offered to give me a good deal and ran through the specs i wanted and were very helpful, and in general sounded a lot more like they wanted my business. The guy always returned my calls within an hour or so. And of course, the clincher was that Dell have already been selling the Dothan cpus for weeks and they have much better choice, pricing, and availability, desite having what i assume will be lower build quality than an IBM machine.

Both IBM and Sony would have better sales if they improved their websites. Dell's website and sales reps are one of the reasons i considered a dell

You will be very happy if you play games on it. But if it comes with the A08/A09/A11/A12 BIOS. DOWNGRADE It or all your games will suck on it. You can get the downgrade on DELLS support site. which is support.dell.com. Any BIOS version between A02 and A06 will work fine. I suggest the A06 BIOS, because it is the most rescent BIOS that doesn't have any game problems.

Will the snap-on lids that work with the 600m also work with the D600???

I'm assuming they will...but I want to know with a 100% certainty before I order mine.

Thanks in advance.

the batteryon 600m sux. this laptop is way overpriced. it gets hot n it is heavy.
1. The best configuration is still under 6lbs, so, your just incredibly weak or something.

2. It only gets hot when doing RAM/CPU/Graphics intensive stuff.

3. The new 600m's come with a much better(longer lasting) battery(i have an old one ).
i have the old one, but 6 pounds for a thin-and-light isn't that light considering your very limited in a few area. It also does not perform as well as other Centrino thin n lights.
It's got allot more features, than most other thin n lights though. Like most come with integrated video or the mobility radeon 7500/gforcego(low end ones). Also some dont have a modular bay, or as full of a keyboard. Most dont have as good of a screen either, or as quality of speakers(not that that really matters TOO much). And also all the ports are amazing, well to find on a NEW laptop. It's got parrallel/serial/Infrared/S-Video/PC Slot/2 USB 2.0's/Audio Ports/VGA/GigaBit Ethernet/56k modem.

U can get a better thin n light with the money ur spending on this one. Good port? tell me about it, probably all lappy have the same ports. 600m doesn't have firewire, good LCD? U can't really judge on that. As i said, the 600m is 6 pounds so having a 9000 radeon doesn't not justify the money. This laptop really is worth only around 800 dollars, but dell jacks it wayy high for configurations.

Right now the 600m is 1450 after rebate. That is incredible expensive for that kind of laptop. It is a rip off.

Here in Australia Dell 600m is far cheaper (i'm talking almost half the price) over IBM, Sony and any other popular brand, and Dell are the only ones that offer SXGA screen as well as a semi-decent video card and the Dothan CPU. In fact Dell are the ONLY ones with the Dothan here in Australia so far. Pathetic is it not? Sony's are way over priced. IBM is over priced but would be okay if it weren't for the lack of SXGA screens, lack of Dothan CPU, lack of video card other than Radeon 7500, and lack of just about everything else except build quality.

To give you some idea, if i were to order the specs above from IBM i would have to buy the T42p, which doesn't even arrive here in Aus for another 4 - 6 weeks, and costs over $6000. So that's about twice the price. Toshiba have no SXGA screens in any of their thin and light 14 inch notebooks, so they're out of the question, and Sony are still charging $4299 for a system with the old Banias cpu, 512mb ram, and a Mobility Radeon 16MB! So that is why i ended up buying the dell. It's being built as we speak.

good choice with the dell...i just got one two weeks ago...i got the SXGA+, 1.8 dothan, 256 mb ram(cheaper to upgrade from somewhere else), cd-rw/dvd combo(free upgrade), 64mb ram radeon 9000, 40gb 5,400 hitachi hd, intel b/g wlan and free 2-day ship all for a lil over 1400 US... i think its a great buy, high quality notebook...no problems with mine, but it does get a tad bit warm but what notebook doesnt...like someone mention, it gets hot when you use graphic/cpu/ram intensive programs but only gets hot on the bottom...this machine is sturdy and doesnt squeek...the samsun panel i got is really great, only problem is two dead pixels, but oh well dont want to risk returning it to get another panel, i can live with two dead pixels...

well have fun with your new 600m =)

It has now shipped according to the order tracking. How long do systems usually take to arrive from Dell once they have shipped with standard shipping?

The day after the order status said it had shipped it went back to "In Production" status! Anyone have any idea why it would do this?? My Build date is still the 3rd with estimated delivery on 11th but it still says In Production. Very strange, any ideas?

A quick update. It arrived today! One hour late but that's ok. It turn it on, and the screen is faulty. Colors are bleeding across the screen and it has one horizontal and one vertical line running across. Rang up tech support, we plugged in a CRT screen and it looked fine on that so we realised it must be the screen itself that is the problem. Tech guy coming some time in the next 2 days to replace it. Other than the screen issue i'm very happy with it. Seems to be built quite well, feels fairly solid and the keyboard is much better than i had anticipated. Also it looks a lot better than i thought it would! The red lava cover is great too. Overall i'm pretty happy, just looking forward to getting the replacement screen! Will run some benchmarks soon.
