digital cameras

Hi guys,

ive decided to look into getting a digital camera, Having trouble narrowing the field down, so i thought i would ask you guys for recommendations or any personal experiances you've had with digital cameras. ( good or bad)

features that i'm looking for,

-about 3 MP or more,
- ability to make short videoclips is a plus.
- make decent print copies
so far i've looked at the sony p72, s75 and some canon models.

From the above list you can pretty much tell i'm not looking for a professional camera. I know the list is not much to work with, but i want to narrow my selection to 5-6 cameras before i start looking at the advantages of each feature.

appreciate any input you guys have

thanks

I've got a Sony P-8. It's the 3rd Sony digicam that I've owned. I don't remember the model of the first two I had right off-hand, but they had nifty little swing out screens. Fantastically easy to take pics w/, but were a bit bulky. Got my P-8 last year after my last Sony was stolen in Tulsa.

Pros: Semi-small (I say semi because it'll fit in your pocket, but it's heavy)
Takes good pics (most of the time)
Lots of features
MPEG movies w/ sound (I have several friends complain that their units don't have sound)
said movies are only limited in length by the memory capacity of your Memorystick (same friends complain that their movies are limited to 15~30 seconds; One has a Fuji FinePix and I don't recall the model of the other)
Tough. Takes a beatin' and keeps on tickin' (no, it's not a Timex, but hey- how many ppl remember that? ) Everything that I've bought that was Sony was bulletproof (My first Sony digicam flew off the dash of a UPS truck I was driving as I rounded a corner, flew out the door, bounced off the pavement and skidded down a paved hill. Scratched, but worked flawlessly. Can't beat Sony toughness)

Cons:
Fussy about lighting conditions; Absolutely have to fight it sometimes to get it to take a picture. IrriF@#in'tates me to no end. My other Sony did *not* have that problem. This one's too "advanced" for its own good, apparently.
Pictures outside are fantastic. Inside shots are definitely going to suffer from any light deficiencies. This camera just doesn't take good low-light pictures.
Heavy.

I'm heavily leaning towards buying a different camera. I'm just tired of fighting this one in low-light situations (which I happen to experience quite a few of). No clue what I'm going to get to replace it. Could be another Sony. Might be a Canon or Minolta.

Money money money. It's only money...

Hi,

Have a look at the Nikon series of digital cameras.

I bought the Nikon Coolpix 5700. Wow, is all I can say!!

Fairly easy to use with superb pics and movies.

www.megazoos.com were shot with a 5700 in macro mode.

Just got my Canon PowerShot S410. Its got 4 megapixels and it is small but the quality is excellent...from what I can tell. I'm haven't had it long enough to get any pictures printed and my printer isn't good enough to print photos anyway. The auto focus is super fast. I guess there aren't as many options as in some of the larger cameras but I just got it to take decent photos not take portraits or anything. Anyway check it out. I got it for $360 at newegg.com, good price and very fast FREE delivery.

I agree with you Flyby.

NewEgg is the best, bar none!

If only they sold AW Laptops

Canon s400 or s410 4 mega pixel with video
Vivid images and easy to use.
Rugged case design. Metal, not plastic. Compact and fits in pockets, which is where my cam is always at..
My last digi cam was a Canon S100 2 mega pixel
Reason I bought a new one:
I wanted video which the S410 has.
4 mega pixel
And my brother wanted a cam, and my Canon s100 which I have already taken over 20,000 pictures from will not break. So I give it to my brother so I can have a reason to get a newer one. :-)

Does the s400/410 series have any limitations on video? (ie- time limitation, no sound, no zoom, etc.?)

thanks again for the input people, looks like iv'e got a list to start researching wth

canon s400/410 series
Nikon Coolpix 5700
Canon A80
Sony P-8
sony p72, s75

any other suggestions?

yup i checked stevess-digicam.com out, but ran into the same problem as he reviews a ton of cameras and gives the thumbs up for most of them, i think its a good site if you have a few models in mind, not when you're swamped with choices.

Time limit is the amount of memory you have.
The mic picks up very well considering where it is placed. small breather holes on top of the case. playback on the cam does not have sound.
Zoom before record only. No zoom adjust when recording.

The Nikon line is what I considered.
Size and simple operation and picture quality is what won me over with the Canon when I first decided on the S100. If I right click my PICTURES folder and select properties, I have 19,098 pictures in there. This is not counting all the pictures that I did not want and were deleted. My s100 took well over 20,000 pictures, and I wanted a new model.

The list you have is a good line up. You will be happy with any in the list. Now you have to decide based on how you are going to use it.

If you really want a really good camera, I suggest the Nikon D70. It really expensive to get, but its a well worth it camera. My friend has one and man are those shots awesome. Maybe I can get some pictures to show to you.

If you ever intend to take distance shots of anything outdoors you might want to make sure you get a camera with a good optical zoom. The Olympus C-750 and its close relatives (C-765 and 770?) are 4 mp cameras with a 10X optical zoom that is seamless (4X digital zoom gives you a combined 40X which gives great distance shots!) I have the C-740 which is 3 mp and also the Sony CD500 which is 5 mp and uses a mini cd as its recording media. Both take great pictures. I use the Olympus for distance shots and the Sony for close ups. The Sony has the biggest lcd screen of any digital camera I have seen - the Olympus has a much smaller lcd screen. (I prefer the viewfinder and a tripod with the Olympus.)

update

i've narrowed down my choice to the cannon a75 and sony p72. I decided to go with a 3.2 mp camera, because its going to be my first digital camera and i would like keep everthing under 300 bucks. (including extra batteries, shipping, higher capacity memory stick). Once i play around with this camera i will know what to look for in a camera and will get a high end camera in the next couple of years.

The canon A70 is cheaper than the 75 but i chose the a75 just for some of the extra features. I'm not sure if its worth the extra 40 bucks. The A80 is harder on the wallet.

Both have similar features and both are brand name products, some key points

canon a75 ($210+)

- looks better ( personal opinion)
- compact flash cards are cheaper than memory stick /pro stick
- does not include charger. The canon charger kit is another $40
- videos are limited to 3mins max

sony p72 ($210+)

- videos limited to the memory stick size
- includes charger
- memory stick is more expensive compared to cf cards

I've been looking as well and like the nikon coolpix 4300, canon s410 and the canon s45 i belive(swivel lcd screen) but I think i will get the 4300 because of the high picture quality and advanced options. the S410 lacks advanced options when compared to the nikon. And the s45 is just too bulky but it it's still a nice camera.

Nikon coolpix 44300 has my name on it. Just wish the battery life would be better.

nice cameras, but a bit out of my price range, let us know what you get and how you feel about it.

Take a look at the Olympus c-4000
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/c4000.html

and if you have a costco close by, you can get one for pretty close to what you want to spend. From what I have seen, it is the best "in between".... easy enough for a newbie, but enough options for the more advanced.

is it just me or do the sonys tend to get bad motion blur compared to some other comparable brands?
