ATI introduces Mobility Radeon X600 - Page 2

from what I hear through the contact i am talking to says that PCI Express is only a desktop feature for now.
Its the Mobility Radeon x600 and it says on the site its for notebook computers, not just desktop.

And isnt the mobo just as important as the gfx card...if you could bridge it, wouldnt that be like having 2GB of RAM in a pentium 133? (or some other analogy thats better)

Whats the point of shoving it in there if the mobo cant utilise the new features?

The bridge on the GPU card would effectively "dumb down" the PCIe to AGP so that it would run on mobos designed with AGP.

Just talked to George from customer service (very nice guy) to talk to him about the status of my lappy. I also mentioned the x600 to him and he said there will be a mobo upgrade in the future so that the area51m will support pci-express

But what do Customer Service Reps know

Doesnt this mean that leading gfx developers (ATI/NVIDIA) will stop making them for our mobile PCI ports and we'll be able to upgrade once if we're lucky before the 'upgradable gfx system' becomes obselete?

thats definetly a good possibilty...

however im not sure how well its gonan work out i mean some of these gaming laptops get just over an hour battery life as is!

So heres the million dollar question:

-Why buy a gaming notebook with a key feature being upgradable gfx when they may not even last out the three year warranty?

Because your an idiot. (Not that I am not referring to you, but to the hypothetical person) j/k. I know you are referring to AW notebooks and well the answer is, because they look good and are a good company.

It is a key feature, but not the ONLY feature. There are a lot of other good qualities with the 51m. Here's a question...why buy a gaming notebook that doesn't have an upgradeable option at all? that definetely won't last the 3 year waranty period.

Because you can get it for a good price?

That's depends on where you go and what you buy...

I know its not the only feature...Ive wanted a 51m for ages and am going to order one once I get my exam results (fingers crossed), but thatll be about August 20th...and then for it to be shipped/arrive itll be september if im lucky.

With all that in mind, Im trying to justify to myself that its worth the 3000 UK pound price tag thats hanging around it. Im going to buy it because it looks nice and will hopefully run everything currently about, but I still want to be able to shove in a relatively demanding game 2 years on from now and be able to play it with decent settings and get a decent framerate. I thought id be able to do this because I could just order a new gfx module, but if this isnt the case...

Aha a mobo upgrade (sorry missed that post) to pci-express.

Sounds nice, though how would that affect battery life and more importantly, how much would that set you back?

Like Daegras always says just bite the bullet and do it

My Comp is 1 3/4 years old... I can run UT04 Great! Same with Hitman : contracts and GTA Vice. Mine wasn't even 100% top of the line too... so you can get 2 years gauranteed. Game companies will NEVER make games to the full capacity, since not everybody has the money to upgrade every year. Gauranteed you'll get 1 year with full settings, maybe then you'll have to knock it from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024... but I'm saying keeping minimum 35fps. Otherwise... they wouldn't sell any games!!

A sager mobo upgrade which usualy involves also changing the gpu goes for about 600-900 i believe, so AW will probably have a price around there too.

This new card still only has 4 pipelines which is comparative to m11. I bet performance wise, it will be on par with m11. Only advantage is the pin configuration so you can upgrade yourself to a better pci-express card. I was expecting 8 pipe. A little disappointed, least to say.

900 bucks to upgrade the mobo and the GPU..sounds like a great price to me, slap a new cpu in there and sound like a brand new computer
