I forsee the possibility of much flaming in this thread. That's almost as bad as emacs or vim.

Yeah, hopefully people are civilized..... LMAO. If it gets out of hand, I'll close it, don't worry.

I'm okay with both.

Though being an old Solaris guy, my heart is still with CDE (I'm using it right now).

And I'm not going to discuss SunView (SunOS 4.x window system).

I actually used TWM yesterday for a solid 2 hours and didn't mind it. I can't figure out how to close windows, though.

Fluxbox is another one that I've started to kinda like. I used it a bit it Knoppix-STD and liked it. Its configuration is still slightly mysterious to me, mostly because I haven't taken the time to screw around with it yet.

I currently use Gnome. I'm a Red Hat/Fedora fan, so that's pretty much my default. I know I can do KDE, but I've come to like Gnome a little better for vanity reasons.

most of the time (98%) i use fluxbox. it's fast, reliable, very easily configurable, reliable.... if i need some kde-application, i can load it in fluxbox without any problems

but to answer the poll i would say: kde. first because gnome reminds me of an operating system with a capital "X" in it's name (i love ambiguity ), second because most of the apps i use are kde-related... so i would say it's a question of habit, as the two (kde <--> gnome) are to almost 100% exchangeable...

I remember TWM, that was default wm in college (and may still be, unless SPARC Linux took off). I moved to FVWM when there, much nicer.

At work it's still all Solaris 6 through 8, so everyone who needs UNIX login uses CDE (We still have NCD X-terminals here, I'm working on one). I hear that Solaris 9 has Gnome as an option, not seen it yet.

Yeah CDE was what I used to do all the time. HP-UX, Solaris, etc. Yup if it's real Unix it probably shiped with CDE. I use Gnome mostly. I can run anything I need from gnome. KDE has some cool features though. G is just old habit for me. KDE was too windows ish when I first got started.

I use both. Every month or so, I have been know to switch and rave about the current windows manager. However, I think I am sticking with KDE after doing my Gentoo install. It is more configurable, or at least it seems that way to me. Plus, it doesn't look like a child's desktop. Gnome makes me feel like I am 3 years old, not that that is a bad thing when I can't get samba working.

Overall, KDE has a nice clean look and nice menu that I prefer. That and Nautilus bugs the hell out of me due to the way they integrate program launchers.

Well. First Let Me Say, im not much of a GUI user, the shell is good enough for me, but if i ever do use a GUI, most likely it will be Fluxbox, Gnome is well.... i just cant express it.. i hate GUIs, and KDE looks too much like Windows

I use BlackBox or Fluxbox most of the time, but the code behind Gnome is about as well-written as any code in the history of the universe.

I look upon it as the way code should be written.

However, if the idea is to have a super-integrated, as-close-to-Windows-as-possible type product, then I have to say KDE is winning that race.

Actually that is not such a good idea as you would end up borking apps over time. In general having both on ones system can be a gint headache wen trying to get both equally functional.

I prefer KDE3. I find the UI to be more usable for the way I work. I don't mind Gnome on occasion though.

XFCE4, kde and gnome are a bit too cluttered for my taste

Gnome for me...

...as someone who 'grew up' from a command prompt, I had real problems with gnome, and even KDE, when I first played with them (heck, I first learned X using things like gwm/aixwm/twm/etc). For the first year or so of running RedHat, I definitely preferred KDE. However, starting around RH 9? or so, I've found Gnome to give me the best combination of Eye Candy and reliability.

I am unabashed about liking the Eye Candy. Gnome (and KDE) visually BLOW AWAY our friends at M$ and it's nice to run my laptop and have people say, "Whoa. What's that?"
