Setting up home network -finally

Hey guys,

We finally have ADSL (DSL) enabled at our local telephone exchange (i live out in the sticks abit) in the UK, and can finally now be bothered to setup a home network with the advantage of having ADSL available to everyone.

So far im thinking:
1 Router - plugged into ADSL line. with 4ports.
Does anyone know if/where i can buy an 1000mbit (gigabit ethernet) router?
4 Cat5e or Cat6 cables, depending on the router i get to connect to: 1 WinXP Area51m, one WinXP self built machine, one WinXP craptop, and one Win98 machine...

But im thinking i would like a firewall between the LAN and the WAN and therefore does anyone know if it would be worth buying:

A) A router with built in firewall
B) A hardware firewall between the router and the ADSL line
Ba) A hardware firewall betweem the router and the machines? Where would a hardware firewall go between?!
C) Using the XP self built machine as the gateway to ADSL with the USB modem that comes free, installing a firewall, and then attaching that to a switch which then has the rest of the machines connected to that.

Basically i need some advice, i need four machines to be able to access the internet (prefereably without having to have any other machines turned on...e.g. i dont really want to use a machine to route internet traffic, i would rather use a router), and i would like a decent firewall as the other three users of the network arent very well....security minded i guess.

Considering the network i maintain at work uses 23 switches, has a gigabit backbone, covers two huge buildings, and connects over 370 machines to each other and 7 file servers, over Cat5e and Cat6 cables and several Wireless standards, aswell as an 8mbit fibre line which goes to our countys firewall (we dont manage it)....youd think i could handle a home network! But im used to having huge budgets and the need for high performance stuff...so i need some advice on a better way to setup a much smaller network.

Cheers guys

w/o wireless-

all you need is a sub 50$usd router w/ a nat firewall built in which is the case w/ most namebrand routers- d-link, netgear, linksys...etc

Judging by the specs on your computers, maybe one has gigabit ethernet, if that, so a gigabit router is a huge waste of money, if ur looking for down the road wait cuz gigabit routers are way too expensive now so just get a 100mb one, I got a great netgear one for my neighbor after rebates was 10$.
