short laptop life

I read many posts here telling that many people's laptop it goes only 1 or 2 years. I don't understand that. After 2 years the laptop is useless? Why? It has expiration date?

Probably because most people here only buy systems that are top of the line, and top of the line in two years for those people is utter crap.

Yeah, I think that's what 'they' mean. I'm not so sure though. I've had my 8890 for almost 9 months now and it's still more powerful than most. so it has a 3.0GHz (I could've gotten a 3.2 but didn't think it worth the extra $230) processor rather than a 3.4. And it only has a 128M graphics card. But still, compared to what most people have, it's a monster. I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping this baby for at least 4-5 years before getting a new one.

Oh i c .. because I want to keep mine (when I buy it) for at least 3-4 years and from this posts I thought that after a few years (1-2) there is a problem with laptops. Weird logic from those people that they always want to have the top of the tops!

If your a gamer 2 years is a long time. For instance if you had bought a laptop 2 years ago you would have at best a 1.7 P4M or 2.2 desktop chip and a 64meg DX8 video card. Such as system just cant play todays games worth a darn. If your surfing and doing lightweight productivity apps 3 or 4 years is not an unreasonable expectation. If your a power user the one you can buy today is just something to hold you over until you can do better.

In that case, I'm a bit middle-of-the-road. My I3700 was perfectly fine for what I was doing until about beginning of '03 - six months before the extended warranty ended - and that was a Celeron 466 (then again the most it was playing was Civ 3 or D2, though it could play Half Life OK ).

My current desktop is a non-HT P4, with an old GeForce 3 card, and games like Uru and Renegade are perfectly happy with it. I suspect that part of that longevity is the LCD monitor running 1024x768, but it's a nice screen and have not yet found a 17" LCD for the same price as this one, while also supporting DVI.

Though I have interest in Doom 3 and/or HL2, I'm sure even my desktop can handle it fine for now.
