Very close to getting Mitac 8050 from rjtech.com - thoughts?

I have been lurking around this forum for a while trying to figure out the best possible laptop for me and narrowed it down to the Mitac 8050, Asus M6N, or the Compal CL56. They are all appealing in different ways but the Mitac seems to look the sexiest and I am leaning towards getting this unit. I was concerned until now about the lack of reviews from folks who had actually used it extensively but looks like laozx may change all that here soon.

Couple of questions:
1. Anyone dealt with rjtech.com? They seem to have the best price but are they reliable? Their resellerratings seems good. Any positive/negative stories to share?
2. I want to get the system without an OS. Is there any way for the reseller to do a test for dead pixels prior to them sending it?

Anything else I should keep an eye out for? Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

RJtech seems to be quite alright. Although nobody from this forum has recenly ordered from them... You might want to check out gamepc. I just ordered my Mitac 8050 from them and it has shipped today (i was hoping to get it this friday, but most likely on monday)

I was able to configure without an OS and even without a HD. They also test for dead pixels prior to shipping it out. This delayed my system for 1 week because they initially found a few dead pixels in the first system and had to restart the 72 hour burn in testing. So based on this i'm assuming they try to ship the system without any dead pixels.. They also have the compal cl56 as well..

There is a way for a reseller to do a dead-pixel test prior to shipping, but I don't know of any resellers, such as rjtech that do. Don't know anything bad about them, or the 8050, in fact, I am considering one myself. My main concern was that I took a look at Mitac's Taiwan website today, and it was pretty sparse. Unless I am looking at the wrong place, all I see for the 8050 is a 2 page "glossy" brochure (like for a trade show), and I don't see any downloads such as BIOS, drivers, etc. anywhere. Again, I may be looking in the wrong place, please let me know, because, again, I am looking at the 8050 as well. They are not a mainstream company, when I asked the guy at rjtech, he said that Mitac had sold more to the military. Dunno about that one either, quite possibly is true.
Anyhow, I think what you (and I) have to ask ourselves is: what does the 8050 offer (other than the 128MB 9700) that the ASUS M6N doesn't have. I am not a gamer, so it would matter less to me to have a 9700.
I hope I have helped, and not hindered???

A woman here on this newsgroup (phairest) bought a M6N from rjtech and had no problems that I know of. She hasn't posted here in awhile.

it's the GPN-CEN3. They only recently received the 9700 cards that's why it's not listed yet, but when you try to configure it you can add for another $180. Keep in mind htey also give 3% discount for paying cash or wire transfer and you also get 3% credit towarrds your account..

I bought from RJTech last week, and just received my Mitac 8050 today. I'm installing winxp as we speak. So far no dead pixels in sight. I too was previously deciding between the M6BN or Mitac 8050. I decided with Mitac. Why? Not quite sure. I think either one you get you will be happy. I decided based on looks. I think the mitac is a little sleeker and slightly smaller. This laptop is not for me. I'm building it for my girlfriend. But I think my next laptop for myself will be an ultraportable Asus S5N. Good luck on your decision. BTW RJTech's service is excellent!

wow good job man.. You are like the firs tone in this forum to get it. I hope u like it.

BTW, do you know if yours includes a subwoofer? I know of at least 1 other vendor that does not include it.

I did check out gamepc. They certainly have a more professionally designed web site but the identical configuration costs a whopping $400 more at gamepc when compared to rjtech. I wrote them an email asking them why their prices were so much higher for the identical configuration; I will let you know what I hear. Also, their units do include the subwoofer though they said it was integrated into the bottom of the laptop so I am not sure why the others would not have it.

laozx: does your unit from rjtech have the subwoofer?

I too was interested in the 8050. What scared me off was reports that it did not accept multi-keystrokes. Can you verify this?

Also RJ tech was not very specific on their website about what speed the included RAM would be....can you please clear this up as well?

Looking forward to hearing your impressions of this machine!

Thank you.

I don't believe i have a subwoofer on this but not sure. I don't remember seeing anyspeaker on the bottom of the unit. I'm installing the audio drivers right now as we speak. haha. But I do know that mine does have the radeon 9700 on it. I was a little sketchy at first because the driver cd that came with the mitac said m10 video driver. But after I installed the radeon driver, i checked the adapter properties and it does say radeon 9700 128mb ram. wheww!

I bought pc27000 (333) 512mb ram. I believe that's the ram that this chipset supports. Not sure about the 400mhz pc3200 that hypersonic-pc talks about.

Well, the 128MB 9700 is a plus that should allow the laptop to age a little better than the 64MB 9600. Certainly keep those thoughts coming, it is very helpful to hear things from different points of view.

Yea I was thinking of doing a whole review of it. I have about 30+ pics on how to put it together. So far the screen to me looks awesome. No dead pixels that I can see so far. Keyboard feels very sturdy. Has good feedback. Touchpad is very responsive. The 1 button mouse thing is easy to get used to. So far i'm just trying to install the rest of the drivers. i'll keep you updated

Can you try pushing a few keys at the same time? I'm just wondering if it would accept multiple keystrokes at the same time.

Unfortunately, I have now "kept thoughts coming" for 6+ weeks without ordering a damned notebook!! The problem is, my thoughts have shifted gears so many times that I probably need a new clutch!!
I don't know if I can help you, since I can't help me.
I can't decide between a major brand (IBM, HP Business class) and an ODM (ASUS, Mitac). I can't even decide on the darned screen size! But, I HAVE TO order something by the beginning of next week at the latest! I am not a gamer, and probably won't even watch DVD's so I don't know why I am insistant on at least a 64MB 9600, like you said, just for longevity. When I sold my darned Dell on EBAY 6 weeks ago, I told myself that I wanted a 12" screen so that I would "take it everywhere", then I said to myself "well, the 17" notebooks are nice", now I am deciding between 14.1" to 15.4". I don't need high resolution. I am down to a Thinkpad T42, ASUS M6N, the 8050 or an HP nc6000. Gonna decide.
Whatever you do, don't suggest another model, oh, well, go ahead!!
