Very close to getting Mitac 8050 from rjtech.com - thoughts? - Page 2

All you would have to have is a boot CD that puts up full screens of red, green, blue, black, white that can be toggled through. Then they would examine the screen to check for dead pixels.
But, like I said, they don't bother doing it.

Loazx you got a great deal.. For some odd reason your barebones included the ATI 9700 card which they did not charage extra for. Hypersonic charges 199 and gamepc charges 180 for it.. Good find!!

If you look at this link Mitac 8050 brochure, you will see that they mention "2W Woofer" under Audio System - whatever that means?

I don't know if I can help you, since I can't help me.
I can't decide between a major brand (IBM, HP Business class) and an ODM (ASUS, Mitac). I can't even decide on the darned screen size! But, I HAVE TO order something by the beginning of next week at the latest! I am not a gamer, and probably won't even watch DVD's so I don't know why I am insistant on at least a 64MB 9600, like you said, just for longevity. When I sold my darned Dell on EBAY 6 weeks ago, I told myself that I wanted a 12" screen so that I would "take it everywhere", then I said to myself "well, the 17" notebooks are nice", now I am deciding between 14.1" to 15.4". I don't need high resolution. I am down to a Thinkpad T42, ASUS M6N, the 8050 or an HP nc6000. Gonna decide.
Whatever you do, don't suggest another model, oh, well, go ahead!!

I say get a 12" ultraportable asus That will probably be my next laptop purchase. I got the mitac as a desktop replacement for my girlfriend. I wanted something with a nice wide screen, and still pretty light. But if you're not going to be watching dvd's or playing games, then I don't think the laptop is right for you. For me, i'm kinda in the same situation as you. I would just need a laptop to bring around with me. I wouldn't use it to generally play games or watch dvd's, because that's what my desktop is for. I would rather want something more portable for myself. But if you're looking for desktop replacement, then I say get the larger lappys. Either it be ASUS/MITAC/COMPAL, i think you'll be happy with whatever you choose. They're all good laptops.

Yea definitely. I think in total, tax and shipping I paid $1670 for everything. And yes I jumped on RJtech's deal when he said the 9700 card will be same price. Can't beat a deal like that!

Yea i saw that as well. I just didn't notice one when I looked under it. I'll take another look again. I'm a car audiophile, and so far I don't hear any woofer or anything in the sound that makes the woofer worth while. I don't think you should take the speakers in great consideration in choosing a laptop. I've yet to hear any really good laptop speakers.

Ok let me clear up the subwoofer issue. The Mitac is SUPPOSED to come with a mini subwoofer. However due to MASS PRODUCTION a whole bunch of them were made WITHOUT the subwoofer to reduce cost (jeez save like what 20 bux??). This is the answer I got from Hyperdata direct. Gamepc's version does have a subwoofer and that is why I purchased from them. Voodoopc does as well. Hypersonic I do not know.
As for RJTECH, Laozx does your have a subwoofer? Play an mp3 and see .

Well I pay 1730 for mine which is a great for me. I know Gamepc is a bit more expensive (not as much as hypersonic) but they let me configure the system without a HD I have the Hitachi 7200 and 5400 drive already. So add in the 1.7 dothan and ATI 9700 I"m very happy!

Did you notice that the Mitac brochure specs do not include the 7200 RPM drives? I don't know too much about these systems but is it possible for a notebook to be only compatible with 4200 and 5400 RPM drives and not work with a 7200 RPM drive?

I just played a music cd. And to me, I don't hear any subwoofer. To me, what can a 2watt woofer really do? The speaker itself if there is one would only be like 2" in diameter. I think it's more marketing gimmick if anything. But to me, subwoofer or not, I don't really care.
Incompatible, no. But some systems might be really tight on space or be built that a lot of the major components are close to each other without much ventilation. This will cause a lot of heat buildup..

I've been through all 3 rpm speeds on my Dell and no problems at all.

LOL i think we need a chat channel rather then a web board.

The subwoofer won't provide any substantial base but you should hear some low tones.
It sounds like yours don't have the sub with it. Oh well, dont think you care. hehe.

I have the hitachi 7200rpm drive running in mine. No problems at all. I did notice some heat under the right side handrest where the hardrrive is. But that was after installing winxp, drivers, and winxp updates =)
Haha, chat channel would be good indeed. Yea I mean if it does have a subwoofer in it, these speakers still sound the same as 10 other laptop speakers i heard. Nothign really stood out for me to say ooh wow, this thing has bass. If i wanted bass i'll go in my car, or listen to my logitech z680 speakers. =)
Well said.. But better a little bass then none. Still I wish they would start using Harmon Kardon speakers.

That's bout the only thing good on the Toshibas..

I don't expect it to be particularly great so if I do go with rjtech I won't be too bummed about the lack of the woofer. That's funny you mention a chat channel, I was thinking the same. Anyway, I am done for the night. I am sure laozx will have a stellar review for us by tomorrow with all kinds of details about heat, noise, screen quality etc. Look forward to that and also to your review when you get your system.

True it would be nice to have some kind of bass. I guess i just can't imagine a good laptop speaker system w/o sacrificing weight and size. This mitac is pretty thin!! I say go for headphones for good laptop sound
post #38 of 41
Yea i'll try to get a review going in the next few days. RIght now can't get my girlfriend off the laptop. hahaha. But i will try to post up all the pics i took of it later tonight. gotta run out and do an errand. but I shall return soon

No, you can drop a 7200rpm into any notebook.

Okay just double checked underneath the mitac, there is a "subwoofer/woofer/dinky speaker at the bottom corner of the laptop" It's like 1" diameter maybe 1-1/2". So i'm assuming this is the 2watt subwoofer everyone keeps asking about. I'll post pics of it in a bit. Some of the pics suck!! camera isn't that great and the flash makes things worse.
