i really like the mitac's 8050's looks over the compal cl56. looks like a sturdier chassis, and the silver is more professional to me. both machines can be spec'd out exactly the same, so performance should be technically identical (still waiting for mitac performance review from laozx, then you will really be able to compare to rincewind's cl56). generally both machines are the same size (mitac is 1'' shorter width, 1'' longer length; mitac is .25 lb more). battery life is about the same (3.5+ hours) pricewise RJtech has some amazing deals, i think you can get the mitac for cheaper right now. only thing that the compal has over the mitac is sxga vs. wxga?

just my observations, let me know if you think differently

thank you everyone for your helpful advice... i really need to pick something by the beginning of next week. hopefully i'll be able to make up my mind soon!

** man, the vaios are so pretty! if only their specs were better.

also, how are those three (mitac 8050, asus m6n, and compal cl56) in terms of wireless connections?

the only differences between the mitac and compal are that the mitac has weak battery life (about 3.5hr vs 4.5hr) and the compal's screen is apparently not as good as the mitac. see rincewind's review of the cl56 and judge for yourself if the screen is really as bad as some like to say it is on the cl56 (it doesn't seem too bad to me at all).

of course, you should consider whether you would prefer widescreen or standard 4:3. some seem to take the issue very seriously. if you are interested look at this thread
http://notebookforums.com/showthread...creen+feedback

as long as the wireless card is internal, it only really depends on what the company you are ordering from offers (generic, intel, etc)

do try to wait as long as you can though for a complete review of the mitac, just in case

Re-asking this question:
Anyone who has an M6N who can tell me what the CNET Asia reviewed meant by the DVD-CD/RW drive being "awkward to get to"???
Thanks,

i wish i knew more about the mitac... it's such a pretty laptop but with so little known about it! perhaps that's the attraction - the mystery of the unknown. i think i've narrowed it down to the compal cl56 and the asus m6n.

how's the aopen 1557g?

I MUST MUST ORDER BY THIS WEEKEND... decisions are tough.

Thanks Aikeo - Check it out.. It seem they got the circle type decals/badges and not the oval ones like powernotebook.com
post #31 of 67
yeah, i have not been able to find a site that makes the oversized ones cheaply... what most of my friends do is stick 2-3 of the square or circular ones side by side on their custom rigs. looks cool if you do it right.

I am exactly the same on the Mitac, love the looks of it, sounds fantastic (specs) but the future is too unknown. I have to look at what will be the situation with a product 1 1/2 years from now. Will the vendor be in business, will Mitac, who knows...

aamsel, just got my m6n two days ago...i absolutely love it! the cd/dvd is on the right side, and because of the way the case is angled (upper part angles down to the lower part...which i think is nice, looks sexy, makes the case seem less bulky), you kind of have to reach down a bit awkwardly to hit the cd eject button. But I've already gotten used to it, don't find it to be a big deal for me.

I just picked up a CL56 open box at PC Club yesterday for $1400. 1.4ghz, 512mb, 40gb hd, blah blah blah. I was happy to see City of Heroes run nicely at desktop resolution (1400x1050) with all the goodies turned up. Didn't seem to see much difference from my wife's desktop (2.4ghz p4, 9800 Pro 128mb, running at 1600x1200). Haven't done any testing or such as of yet, since I'm doing a full reinstall of everything as of now (the store had XP home installed on it and dropped $70 from the price if I decided not to activate it).

If you have a PC Club near you, I recommend buying from them since there's no shipping involved if you have to return or service the laptop. They sell the CL56 under the Enpower brand.

is it worth it to get the pentium M 2.0? or is there not much difference from 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0 except a couple hundred dollars.
There is probably a 3-5% performance increase between a Dothan 1.7 and a 2.0, just get whatever ya can get the best deal on. If a 1.8 is 50 bucks more than a 1.7, sure go for, if the 2.0 is 300 bucks more than the 1.8, i would say no thanks.

thanks roarak, that was just the advice i needed to hear =)

The "bang for the buck" right now would seem to be the Banias 1.6. I was going to get a Dothan 1.7 just to get a Dothan, but what do you people think??
Does anyone have a good link to current Dothan/Banias pricing??

The 1.7 Dothan isnt much more than the 1.6 right now, and everyone loves more cache, so why the heck not =)
yeah i would get the 1.7 banias if you can have it for $50 extra or less.
