The 1.6 Banias is $242, the 1.7 Dothan is $336, I wouldn't bother getting a 1.7 Banias.
I don't have pricing or a dealer for a 1.8 or 2.0 Dothan. Does anyone?

umm... if you build barebones maybe...

hypersonic cx5, 1.7 ghz L2 2mb --> go down to 1.6 ghz L2 1mb, -$49.00

Barebones is exactly what I am asking about.
I am asking for pricing on the CPU's themselves, not how much they add or subtract from a system price.
Can't find 1.8's or 2.0's on the web.
Anyone?

15 percent between the two. Just divide 1.7 by 2.0 and you get .85 so the 1.7 is 85% as powerful as a 2.0, doing an apples-to-apples comparison.

clockspeeds, yes, peformance, no.

Depends on your definition of "performance".

so i think i've finally decided on the compal cl56. any strong objections or warnings? =)

also, where's the best place to purchase it?

thank you all for helping me reach this decision.. haha, it's been a long and bumpy road.

and also, what's the difference between dothan and banias? sorry for the bobo question.
No objections or warnings, lots of people here have them and like them. rincewind overclocks the heck out of his and gets great 3D performance.

www.powernotebooks.com (as PowerPro M 5:6)
www.discountlaptops.com (as Chembook 2056, Compal CL56)
www.hypersonic-pc.com (as an Aviator CX5 I think)
www.gamepc.com (as a GPN-CEN4 I think)
several other places that others may post for you or (I really hate to say it) try a search!

Banias is the older Pentium M CPU, 1MB cache on-board 1.4GHz to 1.7GHz speeds.
Dothan is the new Pentium M CPU, 2MB cache on-board 1.7GHz to 2.0GHz speeds.

Just a little correction...

Banias goes down to 900mhz.

Several ultraportables carry 900, 1000, and some 1100.

You are correct sir,
I was referring to the ones that he was likely to find in current stock for use in the Compal 56.
Cheers!

she! i'm a she!

thank you!!!!!

so compal cl56 it is... and is it worth it to get the upgrade to XP pro and office 2003 pre-installed?
do u already have a copy of those software??

most people do

or know anyone who has them?

xp is definetly worth it, 2003 has little difference over office xp (2000), i just recently upgraded and the only thing new i noticed was that instead of ms frontpage, you have ms publisher

If you are in school, you can get a great deal on the new Office 2003 Standard (aka Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003) for like $130. This is the full version, not the limited one that comes with some computers.
