Windows XP home or Pro for 8887?

Thread Starter
Looks like most people with an 8887 run Windows XP Pro (Myrkat, Wisefish... to name a few)
Just wandering. Was that choice 'dictated' by the HT technology??? or were you attracted by better security, domain login ... proposed by XP Pro?

Thanks

Well, it wouldn't make sense getting HOME for a HT-enabled processor (as Home only has a single-processor kernel).

Plus the IIS in Pro is so much better than the Personal Web Server of Home.

Then there is the whole Offline Files & Folders and Encryption that is missing from Home, as well as the Remote Desktop stuff - I just had to try that, it's pretty cool!

Here's a list of things that PRO has but HOME does NOT:
  • Remote Access Desktop
  • Offline Files and folders
  • SMP, or Multi-Processor Support
  • Encrypting File System (EFS) for NTFS
  • Access controls for files, folders, applications and other resources (NTFS Security features)
  • Dynamic Disk Support
  • Centralized Administration
  • Group Policies
  • Software Installation and Maintenance (automatic software installation, configuration, updates and removal)
  • Internet Information Server and Personal Web Server
  • Roaming User Profiles and Multiple Roaming
  • Remote Installation Services and the entire IntelliMirror management services technologies
  • Multi-Language User Interface
  • Sysprep (System Preparation Utility) support
  • Domain Membership on networks
  • IPSec User Interface
  • SNMP
  • Simple TCP/IP services
  • SAP Agent
  • Client Service for Novell Netware
  • Network Monitoring

Hope this helps,

something for me to remember when I order my system (when I eventually get the cash together - visit my site so I earn more ) - i was just going to use my xp-home that I already got (bad move on my part, but i was trying to save a few dollars) with my desktop (does microsoft still do the 1 desk and 1 laptop per liscence thing I read about originally?)

Money for Andersen

Andersen:

What you need to do is rename the "Kevin Water Dropper" to "Low Cost Portable Laptop Power Device" and you will have millions of hits on your website. You will be able to purchase a Sager in no time.

I suspect that you would a whole lot of tin cans to power an 8887

I'd say Pro is the way to go just for the extra features you get. Home seems more geared to those who don't really need all the extra options and control over their OS generally.

Two Quick Questions:

1) Are there any drawbacks that XP Pro has which Home doesn't?

2) Are there any software compatibility problems, in other words will all programs ment for home work with pro (i think i know the answer but i just wanna be sure)?

3) Alright I lied there's three, but does anyone know of a cheaper way to get Pro. I have home now but it's a Dell OEM version and this thread's kinda making me lean towards Pro. So yea if anyone know a cheap (and legal ) way to get Pro that'd help since I'm STILL saving up for my precious 5670.

You could just get a copy of Windows 2000, it is more like XP (and vice-versa); it also has most (if not all) the things XP Pro has.

Last i read they only allow that for the Office software, for the actual windows you have to buy a seperate lisence for each computer, and you even have to buy a new lisence when you change a certain ammount of hardware on an existing system . All that stuff's in the EULA that no one reads. But then again there's always ways to get around the new lisencing system they implemented in XP and XP Pro.
