Please help with my final 3 choices - Page 2

That was the only review I was aware of. I thought that there had now been others, sorry.
You are right, it is a very nice looking notebook, and I can't totally discount it. Even though it is off my list, it is on my list!! (now, if it were just aluminum like the powerbook and the W1, but then, I think the W1 costs too much for what it is...beautiful looking as it is!!!)

I also must confess a strange attraction to this laptop (aesethetically). =D

I actually thought someone else than laozx had done an 8050 review, but I can't seem to find it. Plenty of 'em coming in though:

"Yeah, I ordered a GX6 on May 7, ship date was May 25, then they changed it to June 9. I called up and they changed it to May 28. I called them on the 28, they said they had started thte burn in and it would ship on first thing on June 1. Called yesterday(June 1) and they said it would ship first thing June 2. Hasn't shipped yet. Going to call later today and see what's up. If it doesn't ship, definately going to try to get at least free 2nd day air if not overnight.

Craig"

"omg omg my notebook shipped today! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait to get this baby in my hands!

MiTAC 8050 chasis (ala CX6, m370)
1.7Ghz p-m
Radeon 9700 w/128mb
2gb ram
DVD-R
Internal Bluetooth and wifi
60 7200 RPM (24/7 extended ops) E7K60 hard drive
and with no fancy auto paint (which is want i wanted, and its nice not having to pay for it)

as soon as i have it and can test it expect a review with stats, pics, and videos!

edit: and perfectly on schedule delivary time!"

"Just Ordered ABS Mayhem G2!
I just ordered the Mayhem G2 (aka CX6, Mitac 8050) from ABS today. They were offering $100 off if I ordered this weekend and I couldn't refuse. I got the following specs:

15.4" WXGA
4X DVD+RW
1.8 Dothan
1 GB Ram
60 GB 7200 HD
ATI 9700
802.11G/B Wireless
Windows XP Pro

The final damages came out to be 2300 with s&h included. As soon as I get it I'll be sure to post a full review!"

I also love the looks of the Mitac 8050. When I started looking 6+ weeks ago, my first attraction was to the hypersonic equivilent, but when I called, they gave me a very vague timeframe. They said that the first "batch" were all spoken for, and that I might be able to get in on the second batch if I acted quickly, but they could not give me any kind of even semi-firm date. (from what I remember of the phone call, it has been awhile)
Then the Dothan was getting ready to be released, so I sat tight and waited for it to come out.
Now, with it out, I am tempted to get one of the whitebox ASUS or Mitac units, but don't know if I would pick a 1.6 Banias or 1.7 Dothan. The current "price point" seems to be with the 1.6 Banias, would anyone agree??
Other than that, I still think the new 15" IBM T42 would be a really nice system, and it has a good price with Dothan 1.7, 512MB, and 7200rpm 60GB (the price I posted) with 15 percent credit card discount, which is pretty good. Actually, the ASUS price I posted was with Dothan 1.7, 512MB but a 60GB 5400 only, so the IBM is even closer in price, unless I did a barebones model to save a pinch more. As for the HP nc6000, I think I have blown that off, the value is just not there for me. I liked the HP nc8000 15" but the price was higher than any of these systems.
So, I have a NEW FINAL 3 CHOICES: (it is a free country after all)
1.) ASUS M6N widescreen WXGA
2.) Mitac 8050 WXGA (it's back on the list!!)
3.) IBM T42 15" with SXGA+ flexview

The IBM has the 15 percent credit card discount. IBM charges tax but no shipping, the other 2 charge shipping.
All of these are within a few hundred dollars or more of each other, so the money is not a factor for me.
I only have 'till the first of the week, please help me decide!!
Thanks,
Andrew

I think it shipped out earlier than expected. So he will be getting it earlier than expected.
nope they where able to get it out today (thursday) which is the last day they could have gotten it out and me get it before i leave for mexico, so i get it tomorrow. They said today was the earliest possible day and that i was going to be given top priority compared to everyone else but they said it was like a 50/50 it would ship today and it did!

edit: when i get back i will be able to give a very detailed review of its performance as since i will have it by then its coming with my on my cruise for a couple of reasons, 1 something to do at the air port and plane ride, 2 i will be able to upload my pics from my digi cam instanstly and clear out the card so i can take more! so like i said expect a very detailed review when i get back, and a short intro one tomorrow

Awesome, and you don't even need any no-dead-pixel smashed bananas, because you purchased from the no-dead-pixel place!!
Let us know when it gets to you!!

And now, we re-join our saga already in progress:
WHICH OF THE 3 DARNED SYSTEMS SHOULD I GET, and which one makes more sense to me?? I will be darned if I get a Mitac from a "generic" dealer like rjtech, since it will go against everything I am down on...but....dunno! All I know is that I just said "darned" twice!!
Mitac has been in the notebooks business for a long term, at least since 1998... if not longer. They are usually one of the first ODM to come out w/ the newest and greatest.

Personally I'd go w/ the Asus quality and great build. Asus offers a 2 year international warranty on "Asus branded" notebooks, which is darn good.
do you think people haven't been posting up their reviews of the mitac because they're so pleased with it? haha... i'm sure that if the laptop was horrible they'd get on here with a bit of ranting and raving... just a thought. =)

mitac8050 vs. ibmt42:
---------------------
lower price vs. higher price
sweet looks vs. boring looks
better gpu vs. worse gpu
wxga vs. sxga+
less reliable vs. more reliable

those are my impressions rated most important to least important. your list is probably completely re-ordered, it's all about what you want in a laptop. according to this list though, i would choose the mitac, imho.
sorry, i'm new to laptop researching... but can someone give me a definitive list from worst to least about the screens? xga, wxga, sxga, etc....? thanks!
by pure real estate (pixels):

xga < wxga < sxga+ < wsxga+ < uxga

widescreens (wxga and wsxga+) appear larger and their viewing angles are better. however, you lose real estate in choosing wxga over sxga+, which is why some will say widescreen is worse than 4:3.

better "viewing angle" looks like this on a wxga:

This is in answer to jjlong, about why 8050 reviews have
not been posted:
They simply have not received any yet. The posted mini-review was the first one on this board. hypersonic-pc is just starting to ship their version out, azstinger is supposed to get his today, and I am sure he will post impressions immediately. He is getting Dothan 2.0. Other than that, it has been sold as a voodoopc.com system (m-somthing, don't know the number) and I was told that there are posted reviews of it. All I found was a link to a one typed 1/2 page review by someone that basically said it was "way cool" (or something like that) and that he had no initial problems. When you are spending $2,000, I just don't think this is the best you can do. For anyone that has ordered one from anywhere, I hope they run for 5 years without a single issue. (really)

aamsel, you think too much. Really.

As for the Mitac having "sweet looks", yes, it looks kinda like a powerbook right now, but you also have to remember:
- It is not aluminum
- It is likely not made with an alloyed compound material
- It may scratch like crazy and look like crap in 4 months
Anyone know that any of this is not true, please reply!
Thanks!

Can't help it, its a curse, not a blessing. I spent 6 months picking my last new car. After my 2000 Passat was totalled, it took me 1/2 a year to pick a new car. What did I pick?? A 2002 Passat!! Before I came to that "enlightened" decision I debated everything from a forklift to a golf cart!!
Am I always happy with decisions that I take to long to make, well, no!!

1.) ASUS M6N Widescreen
2.) IBM T42 15" Flexview (with credit card 15 percent discount promotion)
3.) Mitac 8050 (going, going, almost gone but hanging on!)

nothing is aluminum except the asus w1 and yes, the powerbook.
if i was going to spend $2000 on something i would buy a $30 case and ensure that it would never get scratched...
