Bad Hard Disk? NP8887

Thread Starter
I just received my new NP8887 yesterday, and my hard drive has failed twice. It was working fine when I received it, and then after a reboot, I received the message "No Bootable CD-ROM" "Insert Boot-Disk and press any key". I reinstalled XP Pro, and all drivers and XP office, and everything was working fine again. I shut my computer down before a marathon meeting, came back and rebooted to the same message. I checked the bios, and boot order is floppy->hd->cd so nothing has changed there. Just wanted to check with anyone prior to going to Sager for an RMA on the hard drive.

Please let me know if I am missing something (other then bad HD!)

Thanks all!!

try this

give the CD a shift+1 in the bios

see if this works...

Did you install OS to C: or D: ?? I dunno if this is possible but if you have then it may not boot because you have to have OS on the C: I think...

Verify both drives are present on bootup. If they are, try switching master/slave drives to reload on prior slave drive. This will do 2 things....
1) get you up and running to a usable state to enjoy your new laptop.
2) It it works, it will verify it is in fact the drive and not the bios/cmos or a faulty motherboard.

Although this requires more work on your end, it sure beats sending in a good drive to find out your motherboard is about to fail it's float check.

Hey, I don't know if I wanna help someone who steals my sig... :P

Did you install XP with the MP3 player installed? I don't think it would prevent you from booting, but it would make your system disk D: instead of C: (under Windows).

Worse then me stealing your sig - I copied it too closely! I only have one 60GB 5400. I apologize for the confusion. Sorry for the grand theft signature

I did not have my mp3 player in when I installed the OS. I was able to reboot several times as well with no issues each time prior to this happending.

I'm currently trying to see if anything else has changed in the bios - but still no luck.

Thanks to all who replied!

Well, that's a relief. I've been suspicious of all IDE hard drives over the last couple of years... more and more "bad apples" coming out of all the fabs.

That's why I like to look at warranty length first (most are 1-year, but WD has some 3-year ones). SCSI are typically 5-year, because they are made better.

Laptop drives, well, they're all 1-year unless the laptop mfg/wholesaler warrants them longer.
