AMD Compatibility Question

Thread Starter
Im thinking of either the GX7 or the yet to be released AX7, but have heard from a few aquaitences that I may have compatibility problems with a 64 bit cpu. As I've never owned one, I'd like any comments as to its compatibility with software out there.

I'm told that Microsoft XP Pro, or a special version of it, will run, no problem, on a 64 bit cpu, correct?

I will be running CAD programs and heavy cpu/ram intensive structural engineering software, an then, more importantly, gaming. Are there anythings that I need to consider about going with an AMD 64 bit cpu that would be any different than with a P4 3.4 Ghz laptop?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

I am not sure you are going to run with compatibility problems with the processor, I think the problem is with the compatibility with the 64-bit operating system. Considering the 64 bit is backward compatible with 32 bit, you should be good runny most anything. Even if you don’t get the 64-bit operating system, the AMD 64 bit processor still runs better then Intel for the most part, especially for gaming.

What kind of s/w compatibility issues are you worried about? The athlon 64 should run 32 bit code fine in a windows environment.

The Athlon 64 will work just fine on a normal Windows installation. Remember that the Athlon 64 supports 32-bit code natively. In other words: don't worry about software compatibility. Virtually anything that can run on an Intel processor (except the Itanium) can run on an AMD CPU: including the 64-bit Athlons.

so as I am understanding now, normal windows XP Pro installation will work on AMD 64 bit CPU just fine and it takes advantage of its 64 bit capability.

Can anyone recommend a website that will inform me more on AMD 64 bit laptops, what their advantages are, disadvantages are, etc.

Actually, a normal WinXP installation will not take advantage of the 64-bit extentions of the A64. Windows will essentially treat the A64 as a 32-bit processor (which the CPU is perfectly capable of handling). In order to take advantage of the A64s 64-bit capabilities, you need a 64-bit OS and 64-bit applications. Considering that a 64-bit consumer version of Windows isn't out yet, I suggest that you don't worry about the 64-bit question for now.
