how is customer service with emachines, i am debating between the 6809 and the dell 600m machines i have 2 dells at home and 2 at work and i am quite happy with dell tech support, but i am looking for a laptop for my daughter to go to college and was wondering from anyone who goes to college how much computer is actually used at class and how much in dorm because im trying to weigh the mobility and battery life issue versus power and larger screen and amd 64 issue against one another, thanx in advance

I've never used customer service with emachines so I'm sorry I can't answer that. I do own an eMachines 6805 and am very pleased with it for my college use, as it blended the power I wanted (for games and graphic design) with decent battery life and size. How much the computer is used as well as where really depends on the person. For the most part, I only bring mine to 50% or less of my classes..and that's mainly to keep it nice and safe rather than for notes. I do bring it to the library and log on to the wifi network there quite often though (it's nice). I was also considering the dell 600m earlier but I really didn't want a Radeon 9000 videocard running my games. It is however certainly more mobile and easier to carry around so it's a bit of the tradeoff that you've mentioned right there. hope this gives a little more insight

No offense, but if you are happy with Dell customer support I think you will find EMachines (or just about any other notebook manufacturer) very much to your liking. Just speaking from my personal experience with Dell tech support.

As a college student, I can tell you that laptops are pretty much useless. It's more convenient to take notes via pencil/pen especially in math classes. Also, you might consider the weight of the M6809 since it's 7.5 lb - she might not want to carry that around everywhere.

As far as tech support goes, I only tried the online tech support (only available M-F unfortunately). So far from my experience, they were not too helpful and took several minutes to respond sometimes ( I asked weird questions though). I also do not like how the online chat refreshes periodically instead of other online tech support where it's more like msn or aol.

Hated online help, but phone tech helped

The online tech support sucked for me (the guy must have been talking to 30 other people), but once calling the tech support, they were truly helpful and quick about it (good thing, for there is a toll).
