Made my G556e cooler & *quieter* - Page 2

I've thought about removing that as well thinking that it might be something similar to a thermal pad since it's real easy to make a dent in it. The screws have springs on them so I would imagine that making up for 1mm should be easy. For my g556e, I used Arctic Alumina since I really stink at applying the goo evenly and it's easy to clean off. It's real quiet, takes about 10 minutes before the fan starts winding up while playing games, which is a big improvement. So if I remove that pad it should be even better since I would think that it would improve the heat transfer.. any thoughts on this?

I've finally got around to removing that thing, turns out to be an aluminum foil of sorts. The adhesive wasn't fully applied underneath it so it was already starting to bend since I reseated the heatsink several times. I recommend cleaning that adhesive with isopropyl alcohol, rub some paste into the heatsink w/ your finger in a plastic wrap, and then cover your cpu. This will give you the best results. And using Arctic brand helps too

I'm gonna let that paste phase in before I start fragging aliens. I'll let you know how it goes.

Did you have any luck with that? How did it work?

eh it's more or less, but I wont find out for another 2 days since that's how long it takes for Arctic to reach maximum efficiency. With normal usage, fan remains off and room temp is around 85F and during gaming it takes about 10-15 mins before it reaches 7-8th notch and stays around there.

I'm starting to see a much bigger difference now. Playing an fps the fan was dead silent for about 10 mins, and took another 10 before the fan leveled off at notch 7 or so. For a while I almost thought the fan was broken or something since it usually turns on a minute into the loading screen, now after loading I can enjoy some nice *quiet* gaming.

Thanks for the heads-up. Sounds promising!
