The 16.1" Screen..Good?

Ok, first post for me. Found the site from www.whatlaptop.co.uk/forum.
I've been considering to buy an Alienware Area51-M with top spec. basically and noticed the 16.1" screen.
I don't know a lot about it and i was told on my regular Forum (WhatLaptop) that the 16.1" isn't at all good for gaming and is very blurry with fast moving objects.
Anyone own Alienware with 16.1"? Opinions? Thanks

Hey Sidewinder! It's Rotec from the WhatLaptop forums The 15.4" screen does incorporate a faster response rate, although many 16.1" owners do state that they do not notice any ghosting when playing fast paced games. However I cannot comment personally, as I currently own the 15.4" screen that I am extremely pleased with!

Oh right, hi there Rotec Yeah its the same response i'm getting so far in WLForum. I think my best option is to find someone who owns a 16.1" and see what they think its like. It is widescreen or is it 4:3? If not i'm more than happy to go for the 15.4".
When i configured Area51-M Extreme:

Total excluding VAT: £2,736.00
VAT Charge: £488.95
Estimated Delivery: £58.00
Total: £3,282.95

Hmm..so yes and thats with going the 80Gb 5400rpm, 3.2Ghz EE, few games, Office and of course the backpack..just wondering if my parents would be keen, they seemed up for paying about £2,000 when asked about the QTi..!

Hey Sidewinder! I hope you like it here. The 16.1 inch is just like the 15.4 inch only it has -2 speakers and it is 3/4 of an inch longer diagonally. Think of the 15.4 as the widescreen of laptops. Some people prefer it for gaming for the extra advantage of the horizontal view of the surroundings. (FPS, etc.)

I had a 16.1" model for around a week and the screen is not terribly wonderful - it lacks brightness and response times are indeed pretty poor. The widescreen panel offered by Alienware is certainly better, but still not exactly ideal.
i have the 16.1 inch screen right now. I have no real complaints... the response time seems about the same as the 15.4 inch screen I had on my Dell 8600. The screen is definatley brighter out the box, but it can all be adjusted.

I play Soldier of Fortune 2 every day because i'm on a clan and I couldn't be happier with the 16.1." Alienware LCD.

people have some good arguments for getting and for not getting the 16.1" over at this thread.

Thanks Biggins, cleared a few things up
Hmm it apears mix feelings of that screen..caboosemoose what do you mean by: "The widescreen panel offered by Alienware is certainly better, but still not exactly ideal."?
I would be using the Alienware for a mixture of games such as Halo and maybe some C&C.
I've put the same topic on whatlaptop.co.uk/forum also, seeing what response i got and its basically a no-go, even for the choice of Alienware-"The SiS chipset in their Area 51-M notebooks is not capable of dual-channel operation, and so performance with an Area 51-M will be significantly lower than with an otherwise identical notebook that uses i865PE. The amount by which the Area 51-M is slower would depend on how much the application likes memory bandwidth, of course." (Maybe for another topic though!) + something to do with "ATI MAXION and Nvidia MXM (standard user upgradable graphics options)".

I'm not sure that the 3.2GHz Expensive Edition is worth the extra cash =/ If anything the 3.4GHz CPU is a better bet. Remember you can always send your Area 51m back to the factory for an exchange of CPU later down the line

The 16.1" LCD is in a 4:3 format - The 15.4" LCD is indeed in a widescreen format. In the world of A/V widescreen is considered to be more suited to the human eye's field of view. Imho, whilst playing fps games the screen allows you to see more of the action rather than the surrounding sky

C&C, or at least Zero Hour runs perfectly on my machine. Far Cry runs incredibly well with all settings on 'very high' @ 1024x768. You can see in-game screenshots with FRAPS FPS counter taken from my Area 51m at www.laptopshowcase.co.uk under the reviews section I also achieve a nice average of 38.5fps in the Doom 3 alpha demo, which is poorly coded!

The SiS chipset is not capable of dual-channel operation, but I doubt that has a significant impact on overall system performance. Although encoding formats such as MPEG2 to MPEG4 will benefit in terms of time taken when using dual-channel memory.

Just got my laptop delivered today. It totally rocks. I had high expectations before I got it and I have to confess it has met and exceeded them.

I have 16" screen and I must be 1 of the lucky 1's with no dead pixels, ghosting glare etc. It is 1 of the best screens I seen in a while. I am completely blown away with the 16". I haven't tried games yet but from I have seen so far I don't really care.

I also have the 3.2 Ghz extreme which I thought Alienware had sneakily given me a standard 3.2 as the bios says 3.2 and XP also just says 3.2. But having downloaded the Intel CPU ID software and installed it , it has indeed got 2MB of L3 cache.

By the way, I have updated the system with all my usual crap and it has runs flawlessly. Including my Linksys WPC54G wireless lan card. Everything I have modified the system with is installed and runs like a dream.
My Dell Inspiron 8000 next to it now looks like a Reliant Robin Car next to the Alienware sh1t off a shovel Ferrari rocket machine.

I cannot so far fault any part of this System out of the box. I'm gobsmacked...!!

yeah, mine has the 16.1 inch screen too and I just got it last Satirday and I had no dead pixels, ghosting or any other problmes... he he he...

Expensive Edition.. And good point, i can send it back if i want to change it, i'll have to bear that in mind.
Just checked out your review, very good. Sigh you're becoming my personal adviser, along with SDA and a few others!
Also downloaded that FRAPS thing, i'll test that out soon.

I_Core..information needed about 16.1" screen, we all want to know, especially me I do have MSN: jon__kipp@hotmail.com (2 underscores that is). Your spec. is very similiar to the one i would be getting so opinions/reviews i would be grateful for. I wonder if there have been any tests between the 3.2Ghz EE and 3.4Ghz..and i've literally just remembered, its in one of my magazines..hang on..got it. Computer Shopper, tests 10 processors, benchmarks and everything Okay, as long as the EE is Gallatin and the 3.4Ghz is Prescott, it'll be okay.

3.4Ghz: SYSmark2004 192 (Overall), 3DMark03 6,652, XMPEG 173 (encoding speed fps)
3.2Ghz EE: SYSMark2004 187 (Overall), 3DMark03 6,651, XMPEG 179

Phew..hmm..

EDIT: Turmoil..same for you, information needed

Personal adviser It's what I'm here for! I believe I am the only Alienware owner on the What Laptop forums so whenever a member asks for information on the Area 51m/Sentia I'm usually the first to reply

May I suggest something else? If not do not read the below paragraph! lol

Perhaps opt for the 60Gb hard drive due to the increased 7,200rpm. The hard drive is the bottle neck of many computer systems now that CPU/GPU's are so powerful. The increased revolutions per minute will allow the read/write heads to access and retrieve data in a shorter space of time. This may be made apparent in loading times of computer games. It depends on what is more important to you - Space or general loading times

What I may do in the future is install a 80Gb+ from Alienware in the Smart Bay and save general information to the drive. Any games can then be installed on the 60Gb drive for performance reasons. Although perhaps by then the 80Gb drives will be 7,200rpm However to install a second hard drive the optical drive needs to be removed. I personally use no CD cracks so that the game runs without a CD (Not all games have cracks available) - Perfect if you need to remove the DVD-ROM drive and perfect so that you do not need to carry around CD's with you! However I'm not sure it is seen by the higher powers as legal ...

You are? Hm makes sense really. I object to paying you money for being my personal adviser, instead you shall get lots of feedback and opinions!

Thats an interesting point..thinking about it, i do already own a 20Gb iRiver mp3 player (not iPod..ew!) so maybe having the faster HDD would be better.
I reckon there will be 80Gb 7200rpm, makes sense when you think about it. After all we have 10,1000rpm, although admittedly in odd numbers like 40something and 70something! Oh well.

I wonder if my parents would be happy to pay about £3,500 for a laptop..we'll see

I'm quite surprised at those CPU tests, at least i'm saving myself £331 (according to Alienware website)!

Nice parents lol Tell 'em that it will help dramatically towards your education and that everyone else has a laptop - Should do the trick! Although I'm sure many students like yourself will opt for laptops at some stage. I know many who have in my year ...

I'd hold out for awhile in terms of the EE processors until prices decrease! As for laptop hard drives there is a 100Gb @ 5,400rpm already available for purchase! Just have to wait and see

Already doing that! It would be cool, as my school tech. people will hook up your laptop to the 2-3mb network if you have XP Pro! A few people already have laptops and i would like one ready for 6th Form and showing off a brand new top spec. Alienware would be a good start to a good year, hehe
100Gb at 5400rpm? That would be around £100-120?
Laptop hard drives are far more expensive in comparison to standard desktop units. This is because they are physically small in size (2.5") and only consist of two disks on the internal spindle. The Hitachi 60Gb @ 7,200rpm used in Area 51m configurations is £144 inc. VAT from www.dabs.com, known for their low prices! I would guess 100Gb would be approximately £220-300 inc. VAT due to the massive storage capacity

Ah..expensive. Not to worry, i think loading time is more important to me now so the faster the better! hehe
