You might want to re-think that idea. I don’t know a great deal about Microsoft licenses, but I do know that you are going to have to register that XP copy either thru the internet or call them. If that copy of XP has been used already, you are going to have to call Microsoft to get the registration number to activate the copy. This will require you to give them the serial number (or what ever they call it) and if they track that back to your dad’s company, he could get into some serious trouble.

I don’t know about Microsoft's business license, someone else here might know more. But I would bet money that they have to have a special licensing agreement to install XP on more then one computer. Operating systems before XP are easy to install on more then one computer, but XP isn’t easy. Like I said, if its a used copy you are going to have to called them and get a new authorization code every time you install that copy of XP. And if the serial number can be traced back to your dad, I am sure his company wouldn’t be very understanding. Its not like using a friends copy and telling Microsoft that he/you got a new computer and want to install it on the new one, then all they will do is tell you to make sure the old computer has XP totally uninstalled and probably leave it at that. But the business side might make it a bit harder because I would imagine the company registered the XP and I am sure there are only a few IT people that would be able to make that decision to put the copy on another computer.

tiwaz is correct to point out that your dad's XP serial number might be a group license purchase. Unless its a small company and your dad is an executive, I suspect it won't take it kindly when MS advises that they have violated group license agreement.

Frankly, its cheaper to buy a licensed copy if for no other reason that it keeps your dad from getting ko'd after finding out his son caused MS to descend on his company. I'm not saying it will happen, but why press the issue.

As a side note, I represent a fair number of businesses and a couple of years back one client got nailed for using unlicensed versions of XP and Office 2k. Wound up paying a hefty settlement agreement plus attorneys fees - client learned a reaaaally expensive lesson. These guys were pretty small (25 employees) and frankly I was shocked that MS went after them... I alway thought someone ratted them out but....
