Ok... I guess that pretty much kills the Dell idea until I can get a 20% off coupon again... I been looking at the reviews of the C56 and I saw one owner complaining a bit on the responsiveness of the keyboard on the laptop. Do you guys really think this is a big problem with the CL56?
no

a good keyboard was one of my concerns

this kb is one of the better ones

no cheap see thru keys... not noisey when typing on... proper layout... no missed keystrokes

From what it looks like ditching the DVD-Burner may actually be good.... What are your opinions on ditching the DVD-Burner for a regular CD/DVD and faster 7200 RPM HD?

What'd you think of that guys? bigairboarder54 is that a price/config similar to yours?
id get the 60gig 7200rpm drive
yeah...5400 isn't much of an improvement over 4200, and 4200 is pretty much intolerable. Stuff installs about half as fast as on a desktop, never mind anything else lol.

Well is it easy to find a replacement HD for a C56 and replace it with a 7200 RPM HD? Also doesn't the e-machine have 5400 RPM HD?
Try calling and asking whether the vendor will sell you an open bay configuration. Absolutely no need to waste money buying a package with something you'll replace.

and on that note, if you've ever successfully installed ram modules in a computer, you might consider getting a barebone notebook and installing the cpu yourself.

I've priced a G556e with 1.8 Dothan, 1gb ram on single stick, and 60gb hd @ 5400rpm w/16mb cache for less than $1450 shipped. Individual warranty on the parts, though. But with the money you save, you can get more ram or an external firewire hd. Or, you can actually use it to get books for school.
awingedpig, where'd you find that?
separate vendors found on froogle. pay special attention to places that offer free shipping for the cpu, hd, and ram.

lemme see if i can find the links

Ok here's the break-down of the two configs I'm currently looking at. They both include the following

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Case ( Battalion-101 CL-Series 15.0" SXGA+ 1400x1050 LCD TFT Notebook w/Li-Ion Battery, Universal AC Power Adapter, Deluxe Carrying Case Original Metallic Graphite Pearl Color )
Memory ( 512MB DDR-333 PC-2700 [Notebook Memory] Major Brand )
Video Card ( Mobility 128MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 256-bit 3D Video )
CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( 8x DVD-ROM & 24X16X24 CD-RW Combo Drive [CL-Series] )
Sound Card ( 3D Wave Stereo Sound Onboard )
Fax Modem ( Build-in 56K V.90 Fax Modem [Notebook] )
Network Card ( Build-in 10/100 Network LAN [Notebook] )
Mouse ( None )
Flash Media Reader/Writer ( Build-in SD Memory Card Reader/Writer [Notebook] )
USB Port ( Build-in 3x USB 2.0 Ports [Notebook] )
IEEE-1394 Fire Wire Card ( Build-in 1x IEEE-1394 Firewire Port [Notebook] )
TV Tuner ( None )
Video Camera ( None )
Headset ( None )
Wireless Network Adapter ( [FREE] Wireless LAN Wi-Fi 802.11g 54Mbps Mini-PCI Module )
Operation System ( None- Pre-formatted Hard Drive Only )
Warranty ( Warranty Service Standard 1-Year Limited Warranty + 1-Year i-Care Deluxe 24/7 Phone Support )
Rush Service ( Rush Service Fee (not shipping fee) No Rush, Ship Out in 5~10 Business Days )

except here's the differences
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Configuration A

60 gig 7200 RPM
1.7 Banias
Total: $1714.80 shipped

Configuration B

60 gig 5400 RPM
1.8 Dothan
Total: $1687.25 shipped

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What'd you guys think? Do you see much performance difference between the two configs? I totally ditched the DVD-Burner after considering they are going to be outdated by Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs in the future.
i say go for the 7200 at that price increase, that's a great upgrade.

there is a noticable speed difference in loading from the HD

Do you guys think this is a good price for this configuration? I'm ordering it in the next few days, so any last minute suggestion would be appreciated!
u got the best everything hardware wise cept dothan 2.0 (which isnt really justified by price imho)

so yes thats a good selection of components u picked out there
post #39 of 126
for that? definitely a good config and price. I would recommend checking a website like discountlaptops.com to see if they have a better price, because it is possible that they could. otherwise, great laptop crellion! and your dad even agrees to pay for it! wish i was as lucky as you! with envy!
yeah check out powernotebooks.com, if you're willing to get the 1.7 dothan, I think it's at least 100 dollars less for the exact same config.
