I'm surprised that it lasted that long, since it's against the rules.

Don't think it's because of mentioning certain resellers, I've seen them discourage people encouraging others to buy from PCTorque. They seem sincere in wanting this forum to be about discussing notebooks, hardware, features, performance, and problems.

By allowing discussion of resellers, it opens the gates for resellers to come here and make accounts and promote their own products anonymously.

I think it's a great idea to keep the advertising seperate from these forums. There's plenty of means on the internet for individuals to research resellers.

heh yeah okay I didn't read the rules ...I'll watch for that in the future
post #65 of 126
the rules are kind of foggy sometimes, i just try to remain objective and if something gets deleted, oh well that's the moderator's prerogative

Even though r&jtech.com says Barebone CL56, if one customizes it and adds everything like the HD and memory, does this dealer assemble the laptop?

Aikeo:

As for the possibility of any first-tier company selling notebooks with refurbished parts as brand new, you really have no idea about the US law. Roughly speaking, anything that leaves a factory is no longer new. For instance, many systems offered on Dell's Outlet are there simply due to order cancellations. If you can prove that a certain company sells refurbished systems covertly, start a legal case and you will live happily ever after, being able to buy a thousand of well-specked notebooks per year.

So I'm scanning for below $1700 laptops - my choices now are rjtech, hypersonic-pc, and ibuypower.

Here's my views on each (all no OS):

rjtech - cheapest - $1597.5 shipped, but when I customize this barebone system and add memory and HD, etc, does rjtech actually build it for me and ship it to me? 1.7 Dothan and 60 gig 5400 RPM HD

ibuypower - $1687 shipped (more than 110 dollars less than $1810), but with a 1.8 Dothan and 60 gig 5400 RPM HD

hypersonic - $1665.69 shipped but with 1.7 Dothan and 60 gig 5400 RPM HD (WITH NO DEAD PIXEL INSURANCE)

What'd you think guys? Should I just go with rjtech for the cheap price (but do I actually have to build it myself!!!)
rjtech will assemble it for you, i believe. if it were otherwise, i'm sure that they'd have the integrity to tell you on the configurator page. IMO, go with hypersonic just because of the pixel insurance and because there's not too much of a difference in general use or games between a 1.7A (the A suffix classifies it as dothan, BTW) and the 1.8A. and if you order it now, you might get it in time for halflife 2 (shipping in september i believe)! seriously, if build time is an issue, go ibuypower or rjtech. otherwise, hypersonic is your best bet.
by default, hypersonic insures that there will be no dead pixels in the center area and at most one dead pixel outside the center area for 15" screens. So ask yourself if one dead pixel is worth 49 dollars. Or rather, eliminating the chance of getting one dead pixel.
crellion, you are looking at the cl56 right? if so you might want to look at discountlaptops.com, as i have found their prices to be better than rjtech.com and ibuypower.
reliablity+tech support = hypersonic

if your knowledge about computers is pretty solid and you dont want to wait an extra couple weeks buy elsewhere
post #75 of 126
doesn't matter how much you know about computers, if the thing is defective that's still bad, which is why I think the wait is worth it.
yeah, that's true. you can't exactly fix a dead pixel on your own, and if you get a sucky screen, i don't think that there's much you can do to rectify that other than a new screen. i just don't like hypersonic (or really any of the "paint job" resellers, which is what i call companies like voodoo, alienware, etc. because their biggest and really their only addition to the core system that you can't get from a lower-price reseller is a paint job) because of the price.
actually hypersonic's prices have become more reasonable recently...

Ok BIG NEWS! My dad has finally put his bottom-line price: $1700 or less (nothing more than that!) So right now I'm trying to configure through various dealers including rjtech, ibuypower, hypersonic, etc - the best CL56 I can get that includes Dothan and 7200 RPM HD, as close to maxing out the budget as possible. So far I struck luck with rjtech.com - 1.7 Dothan and 60 gig 7200 RPM HD plus an Intel 2200BG Wireless Card (which I read by some posts works better than the Gigabyte card that Ibuypower.com includes) TOTAL - $1,667 shipped plus tax (does anyone know if rjtech.com does Tax in the US?)

I can configure a Dothan 1.7, 512MB, 60GB 7200RPM, Intel Pro b/g CL 56 from www.discountlaptops.com for Cash $1670 + $25 Delivery ($1713 +$25 if by credit)

I can configure a Dothan, 1.7, 512MB, 60GB 7200 RPM, from www.powernotebooks.com, for Cash $1689 + $30 delivered, credit $1733 + $30 delivered. Wireless will cost $65 for b/g, and $75 for 108 MBPS WiFi.

At www.hypersonic-pc.com I configured a Dothan 1.7, 512MB RAM, 60 GB 7200 RPM, ATI 9700 128 MB, b/g WiFi, Cancelled the OS, Downgraded the Warranty, and it costs $1716 + $11 Shipping, cash or credit it seems.

Good luck.

My CL56 configuration cannot go one dollar over $1700 which should also include shipping.
