Finally got my 8600!

Well...after 14 days of wait... ...it finally arrived. And it was well worth it. This baby is a beaut! My biggest concern with the 8600 was the light leakage screen problem. I have only noticed it one time and it was very minimal! So that's good!
I do however have a few problems. When the fans, or it may be my cd drive, kick into overdrive I get this very loud humm from where the front of the cd drive is slightly rubbing up against the bottom. Will this be fixed with a replacement drive? Dell is only a phone call away!
One more thing...I really hate the crap that Dell has loaded onto my computer! A buddy of mine is giving me bpm studios for some dj'ing side jobs that I do. Would it be cataclysmic if I deleted Window Media Player? Also...my mom won't let me do a fresh install of xp because she heard that you can only use the install disc that dell provides for you one time only. Is this true?
Thanks alot for your help!

the thing about the install disc is not true. If you use there version of it you need to get the directions on formatting from their website (support.dell.com). That should give you a fresh install but it is still the Dell version of xp. Also, if you format the computer in the 21 day satisfaction period Dell will not accept the computer back since it is not how it was recieved. I have now done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro and notice a big difference.

if you apply pressure to the front of the cd drive does the humming quiet down a bit?

I don't believe reformatting will void your 21 days satisfaction warranty.

All high-speed CD drives are quite noisy when they speed up. Does the tray open and close normally? Nothing loose there? It's hard to discuss noise problems without hearing them, so if you feel uncomfortable, you may talk with Dell's support.

alright...the noise actually ceased after a few games of farcry...it's an awesome game with awesome performance from the 8600 by the way... I tried to adjust the front of the cd drive with my own two hands and I guess I just wedged it in place or something! Lucky me I guess...thanks again for all your help!

OK, next time we hear about CD drive problems, we advise running FarCry!

Can anyone confirm or deny whether reinstalling Windows will void the 21 day satisfaction warranty?
In your case, "anyone" should mean "Dell". Don't worry, reformat you new I8600 as many times as you wish, and if Dell doesn't accept it back within 21 days, just let us know. But if you would like to take extra (and unnecessary) precautions, call up Dell's tech support and say "my system is slow"; they will tell you to reinstall Windowns, and you are covered.

Formatting and reinstalling will not void your return warrenty, part warrenty, or any other warrenty. What you do software wise is your business and has no effect on Dell.

hey wooster, did your 8600 get built and shipped on the weekend!?!?
cuz mine has been stuck in boxing since friday....i thought dell doesnt build on the weekends.
I ordered my I8600 on May 31st and mine shipped friday and Im going to receive it tomorrow.
I'm one day behind Wooster on my order for the i8600. Mine went out of the boxing stage and into "In Transit" very early Sunday morning (between 3 am and 7 am). According to the status page, my system was built before the weekend started and estimated ship date of June 9 - June 11. Boxing was definately the longest stage. It seems someone in Dell does work on the weekends

hey Fusi0n, whereabouts in the show-me state do you live?
I always wondered why it was called the "Show-Me" state. (in case you are wondering, I was born there) What do you have to show me?
"Show me" State.... huh?

For some reason, Missouri is called the "Show-Me State." They even put it on their license plates. I was born there, and I don't even know why.

Okay then....... Well I suppose we have some stupid ones here too.
