I was able to get it down to 38 with maxfan and it has not yet gone above 57 (it used to IDLE at 55) ....

-------> isn't that what you said ? if it is then what's wrong with it?

There's a period after I apply it where I think things are going okay, and then after leaving the machine on for a while, it will retain heat and not be able to cool down correctly. It STILL idles at 55 sometimese. Granted it is 90f here, but there's just this weird problem it has with getting rid of heat.
Have you noticed that if you don't set Maxfan to auto and turn off the computer, the fans stay on? I did this and left it alone for a while. When I came back after a while the air blowing out of the vent was still warm, which I could not understand (the computer was OFF and had been for a while!)
I reapplied the AS5 for the last time, I'm just going to wait for it to get better like it's supposed to.

Violent,

If the fans survive a shut-down, there is a probelm with the machine - IMHO. That was one of the major reasons that I returned my initial 8790. Are any lights "flashing"? Like maybe the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock when this happens? If so - return it for a "fixed" unit.

Yes, this happens to me too. If you power on, and power off again before windows starts, they'll shut off.

Try unplugging the A/C powerbrick and see if it also turns off the fans.

Yes, unplugging the AC brick does turn off the fans, which is what I do usually, because it's weird to have them on. No flashing lights, it's only caused when I leave maxfan on.

I misunderstood - I though you indicate that it only happened when Max Fans was Off.
