Acer 8003LMI, and why it's going back.

Hi everyone,
Well it's here - a brand spanking new Acer 8003LMI. I like the slimness of this machine and its design, but the screen is just very poor. The viewing angles seems about 5 years behind other laptops, making it extremely uncomfortable viewing for dvds and photoshop work.
Mine's going back this week...so now the search begins for a decent laptop (centrino) with a decent screen SXGA+ 15 or a wide screen with a high viewing area, but with all the goodies that the Acer had to offer.
I really didn't want to be disapointed with this, really! But I just can't live with that screen and heat.

Here's a brief review of the Acer 8003LMI. Bye bye.

Build.
Well this certainly is a tough nut! The dark gray plastic appears very strong and tight - the keyboard is complimented by a lighter gray plactic inlay, making it appear very sculptured and modern. The trackpad is black and the buttons and trackpad housing are a lovely satin steel (possibly aluminium). All of the buttons feel solid, with no shake or loosness.
The laptop itself is a welcome change to the heaviness of my old Vaio GRT716s - It's very slim and light. The lid shuts and completes the exterior smoothness. Nice.

The Screen.Amendment!!!
Actually the screen is perfectly adequate for desktop software like CAD, work etc. But having played around with a few DVDs,its very frustrating the achieve the perfect viewing angle, especially vertically! The SXGA+ screen is either too light or too dark, resulting in high and low spots whilst viewing. Now although I didn't buy this primarily for DVD watching, it is a big negative. Just a thought, are all SXGA+ 15" LCD screens like this? Can anyone recommend a decent centrino with a good viewing angle, but not a widescreen?

Heat.
Slightly warm on the lap, but not enough to lift it off.
Heat update.
Having the latop on my lap for an hour it does become quite warm on the underside towards the left. Possibly the same heat you get from a cup of tea left standing for 5 minutes. Actually this laptop gets very warm, almost uncomfortably.

Sound.
Well this is a little surprising. Loads better than most laptop speakers. Not tinny, but not bassy either - Possubly just right. I downloaded the lasted driver to hear a much improved sound over the default ones. By the way, for some strange reason the default was set to mono, wierd, so I changed it to stereo. There are two stereo speakers located on the front. The volume is very reasonable. Acer have included a heap of sound settings to improve the 'feel' - a nice feature.

CD DVD Drive.
Well this is a cool toy. It's a super multidrive unit, able to play and record all formats of DVD recordable media. I haven't burnt anything yet, but the tray loaded mechanism feels tight and sturdy. It's removable too! The noise level is pretty good, but only after the intial spin up and spin down..much quieter than the Acer 2012 I had. It's plays DVD's with no jerkiness at all. Nice.

Bluetooth.
Wow. Not experienced in bluetoothing before, this feature could proove very handy. It found my Motarola V600 without a problem - Up popped a screen asking if I wished to sync my phone data, and use and to my computer to recieve and make phone calls! (this Acer has a built in mic to use on your phone). Other than this I don't know too much about it. Still cool though.

Wifi.
Expect to be testing that soon.

Gaming.
Not sure yet. Will try that soon too. The Acer 8003lmi is equipted with a Radeon 9700 64mb (Which I think doubles to 128mb somehow?), so handling the latest game should be a breeze.

Battery.
I am still 'breaking' the battery in so will update you soon. Getting about 3 hours hard surfing time.
Fan.
A weird one this. Only just heard it - sounds very low, almost distant. Kind of like a very distant air conditioning unit humming (make sense?). Seems to kind it about every 5 minutes after long use and plus it has been on my hot lap!

Must be a 8003 thing as the underside of the 8006 is cooler than the ibm t41 and inspiron 8600.

SXGA+ screens have always been a bit problematic on vetical viewing angles. If you want a better vertical viewing angle then get a non sxga+ screen is the only answer.

I do not find the screen any worse than any other SXGA+ screen I have used.

The 8003 does not double up the radeon memory to 128mb...it has only 64mb dedicated for the card and cannot add system memory to it.

Your battery life is way low......3 hours is about 1 hour 30mins less than my 8006 with a 2.0ghz dothan! - Are you running in always on mode? ie forcing your processor to run at max..

dekka can u run mobilemeter on your system and see what the cpu temperature is under general use and under full load?
Idle temp 41c - 45c CPU.

Fan kicks in at 46c and turns off at 40c. This is under normal use surfing/email etc.

Underload havent tried yet - trying to find a program that will run the cpu at 100% - will get back to you on that if i can find one.

I am also trying to find a program that will allow control of fans on acer's - Speedfan,maxfan,i8kfan all cant read the cpu temps, fan speeds etc. apart from the HD so nothing will control the fans as of yet.

Mobilemeter reads the temp ok.

Just set the processor to 2.0ghz using Speedswitch XP. Fan runs constantly (Low Speed) and is holding 45c - Although this is not underload.

Just running Toast CPU Tester (Sets cpu load to 100%) and max performance using speedswitch xp (2.0ghz).

Both fans running Temperature after 10 mins at 100% is stable at 54c.

--------

Conclusion: Acer are far to stringent with their thermal management - although the thermal management is MUCH better (And quieter) than the dell inspiron 8600 running toast on that now (1.7ghz PM) is showing 65c with both fans running and the noise is drowning out the acer.

I just wish I can find a way or program to alter the ACPI fan control function on the Acer - I would rather the first fan turn on at 55c and the second fan at 65c which is way within limits for the cpu.

Arctic silver on the way this week i think and see what that does to temps.

It's just really poor watching DVDs, plus when it photoshop I have founf it difficult to judge the colours. The screen looks washed out and very dull. I may be looking into Hp 7010 as I've heard the quality and sound are very good.

HP 7010,

Nice Screen - The Widescreens have the best viewing angle and a lot clearer than the SXGA+ with regard to vertical angles as well.

What I dont like about the hp7010 is: The graphics card 9200 Radeon - about 2 year old technology and will give you less than HALF the performance of the radeon 9700 in the 8003.

HP nx7010 is certainly a good machine for watching DVDs. It is almost designed for that use. However, it's got only ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 64 MB, and I don't like that some connectors are in the middle of the right side, where they can get in the way of the mouse. Other than that, it seems like a very good computer.

Appreciated, and currently using a Vaio with Onyx screen (x Brite) it's very hard for any machine to compete with it. I've also considered an Asus W1000N, looks very nice, but not sure what resolution is performs at?
Anyhow, I will be sending the Acer back this week, so I now have some deciding to do. The Hp 7010 does look extremely attractive, and I dont really play games but would like something slightly future proof.

I agree about the 8003's screen. This was pretty much my only disappointment with this machine. The viewing angle is indeed pretty bad, to the point where I think it's just not possible to view the screen correctly regardless of how much you adjust it. Other screens I have owned and seen in the past are definitely far better than this. Almost no ghosting though, so it's not the worst either. The Aopen 1557's screen is better than the 8003's, for example. What truly mistifies me is the fact that Acer uses such a great looking screen on some of their other offerings...

In any case, I am still happy with the 8003 because everything else just works out so well for me. It's the best compromise I could find for my own needs.

hmm thats interesting

i wonder if dothans really run hotter

so every 15 mins ur fan kicks on? this is under general use? (600mhz)

if u want to run full speed go to ur power settings and enable "always on"

need need for external programs or whatever
post #12 of 15
Oh wow, I'd never heard that SXGA+ screens had poor viewing angles. I didn't know the resolution affected viewing angles.

Now I'm worried, b/c I was going to get a SXGA+ laptop

Rincewind,

Yes I know about the always on to select the cpu to max performance. However I just like using speedswitch XP from the traybar - I like to be in control

I have the author of speedfan taking a look at the fan control. Apparently the superio ncxxxxx chip in the acer and possibly the cl56 is somewhat complex..

hopefully he will get round to it soon.

kangazoom - I think that the 8003 lmi is the exception, being a very poor Lcd screen it was almost impossible to watch a DVD, let alone adjust colours in Photoshop. The screen was full of high and low points....If the screen was better I would have certainly kept the machine, as it had some very nice features...but a little too hot.

The positioning of the sound-connectors in the front are a strike of greatness, I tell you. Why, you ask? Because you DON'T USE THE NX7010/X1000 at home/as a desktop without the HP Basic Port Replicator, which even gives you the possibility to keep one power adapter in the bag, forever (because it ships with its own).
It gives you a more ergonomic keyboard handling, an extra power-cord-set, sound-connections at the back, and only use the front ones on the road, where their usage belongs, and then you only have to be irritated about the lack of a better gfx-card... But hey, honestly, can we ever be perfectly satisfied?

Bottom line - DON'T buy the NX7010/NX7000/X1000 without bying the investment of a lifetime for this laptop (and compatible ones from HP) - the HP Basic Port Replicator!

Sincerely
br0ken
