What do you find yourself using more, the touchpad, trackpoint, or an external mouse. and if you use and external mouse, what do you use when thats not available?

At a desk I use a USB mouse looking into a bluetooth mouse
but when traveling I use the touchpad mostly.
I have been trying to get used to the trackpoint, cause I'm getting an X40 and it's trackpoint only.

Why are you getting the X40 over an updated T series? is there something you dont like about the T series, or are u just looking for smaller size? Thanks for answering, im torn between the two.

Nothing wrong with the T series I love this machine.
Just looking at the X40 for the smaller size.

Are IBM's really superior in build quality compared to other machines u have owned or used?

Definatley.
They all have their strengths and weaknesses but overall the build quality of an IBM is unmatched. Especially when looking at the T and X series.

ARRGGGHHH, still cant decide between t or x series. i like the form factor of the 12 inch x series, but coming from my old compaq, everything will be smaller lighter and better, the ONLY thing that even gets me looking at a company other than IBM is the pricing, but most people tell me that you pay for what you get. So i guess ill be debating with myself for a few more weeks, and then when the money comes in, BAM ill order something, but until then itll be agonizing

If you like the small form factor I would defiantely go with the X series.
If it's the optical drive thing that has you concerned you can get the media slice for the X40 and then you can add an optical drive a spare HD even an extra battery fits in the bay. Even with the base atached it is still small than the t series and weighs in at 4.9Lbs so still a very portable computer.
Also a USB optical drive will work very nicely.

I have a T40, and I can't see why someone would go for an X40, other than if they NEED ultra portability. IMO, the T40 is pretty darn ultraportable as it is. THe build quality is the best of any laptop I've seen. Looks great and doesn't feel cheap anywhere. Plus it's backed by IBM's KILLER standard 3 year warranty...no long wait times on the phone, first class service...etc. Sure you can get a more powerful system for less $$$ but owning an IBM is truly an experience and you certainly get what you pay for...

ThinkPads Rock!

Nice laptop! I just got an IBM ThinkPad as well.

Specs:

IBM ThinkPad T42 Model

Pentium-M 735 (1.7 Ghz, 2MB L2 Cache)
512MB DDR RAM
15.1" SXGA+ TFT (Thin Film Transistor) Screen
80 GB Ultra ATA HDD
CD-RW/DVD-RW Multiburner
64MB ATI Radeon 9600
(wish I had 128mb, but I'm not crying over it)
10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Card
IBM 802.11 A/B/G Wireless Adapter

It also came with a crapload of software, since I bought it from my University (including Office 2003, Adobe Acrobat, IBM specific software, FTP stuff, AFS, etc. etc.).

Only thing my laptop is lacking is a firewire port, but again, it's nothing too serious. Oh and it looks just like the laptop in this thread, just with 15.1" screen.

Don't ask about the price.. you'd cry if I told you. ;-)

I just got one about three weeks ago... I have not gotten myself a bluetooth mouse yet (thinking about the one bluetooth one Belkin makes) since I have spent about two hundred on a laptop bag (a Brenthaven), a nice pair of headphones (Sennheiser px-200) and some new games now that i have a nice enough system to play it on (Far Cry, Call of Duty).

Anyways i was mentioning the mouse because i wanted to say that since i dont have a mouse right now i have been using the trackpoint exclusively and i must say i now couldnt stand to have a laptop with the touchpad only. It took me about three hours to get the trackpoint down completely but it is well worth it. So much faster and easier than a touchpad; plus you have a center button that works as the center button on a scroll mouse which i simply cant live without.

T42p 2373-GVU
PM 745 1.8
512 ram 60gb 7200 rpm HD
128mb Fire GL (Ati 9600m)
IBM 802.11 a/b/g and Bluetooth
5.2 Ibs

Paid $2717 or about 17% off the IBM list price of $3279

Well, you asked for it!

I'm going to be a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and they have an awesome program requiring all students to have laptops. I happened to be one of the many students this year who recieved a laptop grant for an IBM R51, so I decided to upgrade to the T42 and take advantage of a sweet opportunity.

Unfortunately, the IBM website is not letting me find the retail price of the laptop right now but it was around $2,800-3,000.

PRICE I PAID: $730.90, which includes a crazy 4-year warranty that covers theft, fires, and a list of ridiculous possibilities. Also 4-year onsite, over phone, and online technical support.

NICE pair of B&O earphones. Glad to see a fellow B&O enthusiast on the forum. BTW, I'm waiting for my T42 also. Damn thing is delayed 2-4 weeks. Estimated shipping date is 11.19.04 so give it about 2-3 weeks to get here.

IBM T42 Think Express Model 2379R9U
Intel 745 Centrino with 802.11b/g
60 Gig 7200rpm HD
Bluetooth
CD-RW/DVD combo drive (I'll get the multiburner later maybe)
1 gig DDR RAM
Biometric fingerprint scanner (uhhh no I don't care what you say... Fingerprint Scanner... >=)
Radeon 9600 64MB video card
15" 1400x1050 screen
Extra AC Adapter
etc.

I bought the extra 512MB and AC adapter from PC Connection b/c they were considerably cheaper (IBM charges $50.00 more for the ram on their site and tax). The ram is IBM branded OEM stock so no problems. I'm currently thinking about purchasing the Dock II or Mini-dock b/c I'll be using the laptop as my main computer (I'm using my old Dell i8100 at the moment). Also thinking about purchasing the slim Li Ion battery. Any suggestions?
