XP upgrade issues

Thread Starter
I have currently on my desktop have windows 98 and then xp upgrade on top of that, and although I don't remember doing it I think it is activated.

I'm wondering if I get a laptop and put the same deal on it, same windows upgrade disc used will I get hassles about activating it?

I also have the option of getting another upgrade disc for about $70 and then I can use that, I assume with 0 hassles.

Anyone familiar with this and all the license crap that MS uses? If I use the same disc will I get hassles each time I connect to the internet with both machines?

Thanks for the help.

Microsoft will only allow it ran on one computer. If you plan to run the retail 98 with the XP upgrade on the laptop, you will be fine if it's the only system you have it on. Registration will probably require calling them though after having it on the desktop.

I'm still a little confused.

If I use the same retail 98 and use two different XP upgrade discs, will I be ok?

Or would I need two different retail 98's and one upgrade XP?

Thanks.

You can have two upgrade disks "technically" as long as both machines had a previous version of windows.

I mean, on the "up-and-up" an upgrade version IS just that. However, with past upgrade versions, the install only asks that you insert your previous-version's CD for verification prior to proceeding with installation.

So, if you have your Windows98 CD and (2) XP upgrades, you should be able to install the other one on the second machine using the 98 CD (even though the computer is new w/o an OS).

Again, it's not "technically legal" - but it is also Microsoft and technicalities do not seem to bother them when it's in their favor, so...

when xp first cameout with activation, you could use the same liscence on a desk and a laptop. I'm hoping its still thecase so I can just buy one xp pro and use it on my desk and my laptop when i get it.
