I don't kow what you do for a living but you certainly could make a great one doing this. I can only imagine the lineup of people who would love you to paint ther Dell and other laptops,Beautiful Job!

i'll have it in my tutorial, but yes you need to sand. Or at least scruff up the surface so the primer adheres properly.

rocket, I'm a student at university of illinois majoring in finance. The thought of turning this to a business did come to me, but there are many reasons why I bet people wouldn't send it in to paint. reason 1 for instance it takes about a month to complete. I believe it takes pctorque about a month as well for the turn around time on painting.

Hey about the Badge? y dont make a thread or something of people that would do the badge mod and present it to the dude so he can start making some, if enough people here want it? Im thinking he would do it for like 2000 people. i know a lot of people here are scared to try something like that but to be honest ur instructions are the hard to follow. when i was doing the led mod i did something stuped but if it was because of that it would of been all good. anyway when u put the paint mad online i will do everything all at one time. anyway man let me know about the badge. If this guys is going to do it i would like to do everyting at one time.

Does your painting thread cover how you removed the lcd cover? I'm may undertake a similar feat when i get my compal 56. You removed all the parts before painting them i gather.

I'm sure it will.

Spiike, I noticed you painted your CD drive? Is that your original?

Even if i get a complete D800 case, LCD front/back, top, HDD caddy AND base....

i'll still have the original CD drive case on the side? and also the original battery at the bottom?

those would look silly grey, with the rest painted! :-)

just paint them?

Hehehehe and if something goes wrong, send back as 8600 with painted battery and CD drive? :-) hehehe

I think i am going to ask my friend who paints cars to hook me up with the black gloss with realistic flames rising from the bottom of the back of the lcd case. With my cpu experience and his paint skills, we could churn that out in a weekend....

Ill keep you all posted

I'm sure this is a very n00b question but why not just buy the d800. The reason I ask is I'm looking for something along the lines of a 600m or d600 and I think I might be missing a big difference.

The D800 did not offer the 128MB MR9600PT, and purchasing that to add to a D800 would have cost much more than buying the D800 chassis. The D800 was also more expensive to start with, and had slower RAM (although you could get aroung that).
