Compaq Notebook Memory Upgrade

Thread Starter
I currently own a Compaq Presario 1700US Notebook that I would like to upgrade the memory in. As of right now, it only contains 128MB of PC100 memory. According to this webpage (Compaq Presario 1700US ), it says the notebook contains 128MB of PC100 SDRAM. When I am looking for memory, do I simply look for regular SDRAM? Or SODIMM SDRAM? Also, does it also have to be PC100, or can I go with PC133? I am asking this because PC100 memory is quite hard to find while PC133 is a bit easier. Thanks for any help!

When looked up over at Crucial, they only bring up pc100 ram, so maybe you should stick to that. However, while not a sure thing, maybe if you were to insert a stick of pc133, it would work, but just run at normal pc100 speeds.

Thanks for the link! Though the memory Crucial recommends are only 128MB modules. Are there 256MB modules that I can use? I was planning on 2x256 rather than 2x128.

I did a search over at Kingston, and they seem to have the 256 modules you want.

How about these?
Crucial 256MB

It is exactly the same with the exception that is a 256MB module rather than a 128MB module.

That one appears to work, and it is at a better price than the Kingston ram i linked to.

Do I necessarily have to get 2x256 or can I go with 512x1? As the 512x1 option is much cheaper? Here is what I found for only $116:

Kingston 512MB

mike, if you can get 1x512 for cheaper definitely go for it, but i'd be willing to bet it is of a lower quality than the 2x256. having one dimm is better than having two, it leaves you room to upgrade later plus give your cpu one place to look instead of two (insert technical definition of how this affects performance here, i'm tired).

usually the 1x512 dimm is more expensive than the 2x256 dimms, much so in some cases. hope this helps
