AW ATI 7.95+ driver update trouble

Thread Starter
has anyone has this trouble with their aw 51m?
i dl the newe 7.91 thru 7.99 drivers.
when i installed it it would freeze up my lappy.
my lappy came with the radeon 9600 128m card.
i can play most games, but when i tried to run KOTOR it tells me the catalyst drivers are too old. when i to load the 7.95 drivers or newer it crashes.
what am i missing?
do i need to flash the bios?
AW techsupport is no help since i'mnot the orignal purchaser of the lappy.

any help?

your question makes me think its a installation problem?
r u removing the old video drivers before installing new ones? . just asking, cause most times its a installation problem,
you should remove the ati control display and the ati video in the
add/ remove programs.. then restart puter and let it find the hardware but DONT use the recommended drivers it finds,, always answer no or find yrself, but never select any drivers from the list it displays, cause you have the drivers you want to install that you d/l...now then when its done trying to find drivers, go to your folder where you have the drivers you want to install and install from that..
this could be soulution to yr problem or maybe you have done that correctly and theres a problem somewhere else, anyway i hope this may fix yr system
good luck

Apex, What version of the drivers did you have installed before you tried upgrading them ?

I have driver version 6.something.. dated 6/23/2003.
it's not that old. it's the original m10 driver, it works fine.
I also did the uninstall of the orig ATI drivers and rebooted, it still crashed when i ran the 7.91 or newer drivers.
it's wack!. i even tried the omega driver, but it's NG also.
i'm thinking ati card bios problem, i need to flash the card bios or the 'puter bios?
'puter is usin 1.13 bios and i have no idea what the ati bios is...

When it crashes apex, do you get a VPU error or blue screen/freeze etc?

Does it crash/freeze whilst installing the drivers or after when your running a game/app or something?

If when running a game or app I was wondering if it was heat related. If it's during the installation it sounds dll related.

If worst comes to the worst Apex have you thought about a reinstall. At least then you can start with a fresh driver install.

I CORE,
when it 'crashes' the computer freezes during reboot after driver install, i'll get a flicker of the blue screen for like 1sec.
computer will hang up and i'll have to reboot and it'll take me to the maintenance menu (safemode, last know good, etc) so i chose last known good setting and it rolls back to original driver.
even with current driver installed, i run most games fine with exception of KOTOR. if i run kotor, it'll freeze mid game...

I'm 2 sec away from a reformat and fresh install.

Apex, a re-install sounds like your best bet. You may also want to remove any remnants of the ATI drivers with Driver Cleaner. http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

Its worth a shot. Otherwise....
