What is overclocking?

Thread Starter
I just hear you guys say it alot... I dont know what it is...

And what are benchmarks?

Thanks

Overclocking is the act of increasing the clock frequencies of the CPU or GPU, or Memory in some cases, to achieve greater performance. Overclocking is like turbo charging an engine, it increases performance, but it causes the chips to generate more heat and if done wrong can damage the CPU/GPU/memory.

Benchmarks are standardized tests that allow direct comparison of different hardware.

benchmarks are like seeing how much your hardware can lift

flappy got it first try, but let me make it a bit easier to understand by putting it in a couple sentences.

overclocking means forcing the chip to work harder that originally intended, it gives off more heat and could die.

benchmarks are like standardized testing for kids in school. it's a way of comparing all the cards without pulling some kind of bias into it.

DONT DO IT. UNLESS U KNOW WHAT UR DOING..DONT EXPERIMENT WITH IT..CUZ IT WOULD KILL STAB BLOW SHOOT RAPE RIP SLICE DICE BOMB BURN CUT HANG CHOP DRILL U..oh yeah and it bad for the card....makes ur computer reach its maxXXX and + .....its like u lifting 50kg and u be forced to pick up 70.....but if u go 80KG...well nothing would happen really but u would be reallllly tired and u wouldnt want that would u.....im glad we had this talk we should do it again sometime...

huh? benchmarking is fine, lol, it's "burning in" you should be wary of

I sprinkled meth on my CPU trying to overclock it. Did not work.

I never overclocked before i got my 51m and i havn't klled my system..powerstrip makes it pretty foolproof

don't let him scare you biggens!! just take baby steps if you decide to do it..dont push to much at much, oveclock a little and then test to see if your system runs ok.

Also iI think its worth downloading the omega drivers just to get the overclocking test program it comes with..i dont remember exactly what its called but it will overclock your video card in ismall increments and tell you what you can safely overclick too...very helpful if your not sure what your doing

That's right. He over clocked his palm one day now he is completely against over clocking of any sort.

awesome, if i overclock my palm i can jerk off at speeds unknown by the likes of Dell and Sager!

nah his right...i wasnt trying to scare u or nothing more like a friendly warning...its really fun....i thought i was making great sense with the weight and all...but ne whoo..it fun cuz u be all like ...weeeeee my card can do this ....

Lovearea51m_1, I can understand JarJar Binks easier than you. You freaking type in broken English. Worse than listening to a wigger trying to mix Ebonics and English.

"No, it is his privilege...I was not attempting to scare the letter 'U', it was nothing more than a shot across the bow...I find it very enjoyable...I cogitated upon it and to me it seemed great smell with the mass times the gravitational constant and everything...but who is my knee?..it is enjoyable, because you like it....piss? my card can do this!"

Hopefully that cleared up the meaning a bit for you Darth!

All of this mesage is a lie, including this line.

Actually, smart guy, I was well aware that gravity is not constant throughout the universe, and, in fact, it varies on the Earth's surface as well. It was required learning in high school physics, as well as necessary to persue a Mechanical Engineering degree from a top rated school. Now would like like to continue your parading or would you rather just take the friendly jabs "like a man" (no offense to the female readers out there). If you choose the former may I suggest that we change the subject to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, micro/macro-economics, material strength theory, or maybe system dynamics...as my physics are a bit rusty. If you choose the latter, you will realize that we have never met, and as such we are not your friends (yet) that may be able to decypher your quickly typed messages, and cannot properly infer your tone or ideas from the unfinished, and difficult to read, thoughts that you type. A little bit of grammer goes a long way towards communicating your ideas...that is, after all, what it is for.

overclocking: to shoot someone more times than necessary
benchmarking: the brown stain left after expelling a juicy treat for the next bench-goer to enjoy

Grammar. The irony was far too much to pass over, unfortunately.

Other than that minuscule error, completely and wholeheartedly agree with that well-thought and well worded reply.
