Extended Warranties

This is probably not a new concept: why would you want to line Dell's pocket even more with an extended warranty? I suspect they have at least a 60% profit margin with those warranties.

It's been my exp. that the standard warranty is more than enough. I've had 7 laptops in my life and none needed the extended given the owner treats the computer with "normal" care.

If anything is going to fail, the majority of technical failures will fall into the first few weeks. And anything else will be over-covered by the 1 year warranty.

You are already buying a ~2k laptop, why would you bet on its failure?

Unless you live in a warzone, plan on using the comp. as a doorstop, are accident prone, or have money to burn---think twice about that extended warranty.

It can save a lot of money and grief down the track, components can fail after a year or two's use, sure if they are going to fail it is most likely to happen in the first year, but often it can take longer than that and this is where the warrenty becomes worth its weight.
But this is personal preference, some people buy extended warrenties for their possesions (laptops, Televisions, Whitegoods, etc) and some choose not to, that is their business and their preference.

Stu,
I notice you even got 'theft' protection? Wow. Is there going to be a terrorist attack protection plan any time soon for lappies?

No, but it was cheaper than getting theft insurance for it through my Home and contents insurer.....

I got the 2 year warranty because I don't want my laptop to fail 18 months down the road and leave me with a huge bill to pay, as I will be a poor-a$$ college student then. I want the thing to last 3 years, but after the 2 year warranty is up, I will either extend the warranty if I have been having problems, or just hope for no problems for a while. By then it will probably be time to get a new laptop (probably a mobile workstation for CAD).
