VAIO Type S - Page 56

Really? That doesn't sound right that a laptop can only output its own LCD's max resolution. Why would they have anything to do with each other. It would seem to me that it would be more about the video card's driver.
Yet somehow it is. The manual does confirm that the external display runs at the maximum resolution of the computer's own LCD.

Aren't there various dual-monitor modes in the Display settings?
I did not say that the external monitor is limited to the resolution of the LCD. Read again. You can set it to 1600 x 1200 - but when you enable both, the LCD will display only a 'window' into the full 1600x1200 desktop. It will scroll when you move the mouse around.

Well, I just tried it -- S170 with Radeon 9700 into a Dell 20" 2001FP running at 1600x1200.... I didn't get the scrolling window effect. Initially it just displayed the same image on both the Vaio and the external screen (1280x800 on both); when I clicked on "extend my screen" from the control panel, it actually made the external screen the main monitor. I was able to run the external at 1600x1200 with the internal at 1280x800 in dual-monitor mode. Also I was able to run just the external with the internal screen switched off altogether.

The quality wasn't all that bad at 1600x1200, incidently -- certainly not as good as DVI (there's a bit of a soft blur), but it's certainly useable. I was also able to run Unreal 2004 at 1600x1200 with decent performance!! (all the options set to "Normal" quality).

MrT-Man, thanks for the info. I actually have the predecessor to your monitor, the Dell 2000FP. Thats good news for me. No big deal that its VGA since my shuttle is using the DVI input anyway.

Incidentally, I finally ordered the S170B14 through PCNation today!

hard drive upgrade is gone.. wonder what will come next. I'm guessing the next promotion won't come out for about another 14 days.

real mav: The configuration that you have in your signature is exactly what I'm looking for. Could you please tell me where you got it, and how much it was? And of course I prefer online, so I dont have to pay any tax!

Thanks! Much Appricated!

DOes anyone have the S-series docking station? It has DVI output. Does it also support 1600x1200?

Performance??

Hey guys,

Is it bad to leave the Power Management settings to Home/Office Desk? I notice when I leave it at this setting the fan is running constantly at full speed. Also the computer twice so far just shut itself off...

Thanks,
Jon

Basically Im asking if anyone leaves their power settings to Home/Office Desk for long periods of time without the notebook automatically shutting down.

Thanks.

Hey guys:

I got my S170VPN today and like what I see so far except for...

1) All the AOL/Netscape Norton, MS trial crap pre-installed. I guess that comes with the territory.

2) I'm having a problem getting onto my WiFi network. It's being recognized and it says that I'm on it (excellent signal strength) but not able to get to any website.

3) I tried to install an iso file but can't open it.

4) I have a C drive and a D drive somehow. C has 13 GB (8 free) and D has 37 GB (all free). Why did it come partitioned? And is it normal for there to be only 50 GB total in a 60 GB drive?

The screen looks great and I LOVE the keyboard. Can anyone help me out with the small problems I'm having...

Thanks!

2) any intermittent disconencts? verify that your ip address is correct, if your using a wireless router, you should have the ip you used to get with your wireless router. Try in the command prompt typing /ipconfig /renew (i think that is it)

3) i wasn't aware that you were supposed to install iso files, usually you burn them

4) why not have partitions, yes it is normal to lose a good amount of gigs, out of the top of my head 54 out of 60 seems about right, but I am talkin out of desktop hard drive experience. it could be worse for laptop hard drives
post #1114 of 1493
Well, there are three partitions in your 60 GB harddrive: C, D, & a hidden one for all the recovery files, so your HDD size is about right. Sony had been doing the C & D partitions for years, and they started doing the additional hidden partition some time last year (or early this year).
Others have mentioned in this thread that there is a hidden partition (about 5gb, I thnk) on the Sony's hard drives that contains the information needed to recover the original software on the laptop, or to make recovery discs to do that same task. And, it is normal to have a bit less usable space than what the capacity of the drive is rated.

No...your laptop is just overheating.

Is that a problem I need to get fixed, or is it normal that it may happen?

And should I be using adaptive CPU settings instead of performance?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response. My only problem now is the WiFi. It's picking up signal from other networks nearby (including mine) and switching from one to another but even though it says that it's connected, I'm not actually able to get on the internet at all.

I got my IP address from my desktop, but have no clue what to do with it. My old crappy Compaq laptop would just pick it up automatically. I;m using a Microsoft MN-500 base station FWIW.

I think Sony really made a mistake somewhere in their BIOS settings. Once again I was running my laptop on Performance processor settings so it would run at the full 1.8ghz while plugged in. After a few minutes it shut itself off. Truthfully it didnt even feel too hot. A litle hotter than adaptive but definitely not a "melting" point. I wonder if they set the shutoff point too low, or if the sensors are too sensitive. Maybe this is why my fans never shutoof also.

I remember someone saying that their computer shutoff when playing Doom 3 for more than a few minutes. This would be the same scenario because I'm sure Doom 3 just forces the laptop to run at max CPU as well. I'm assuming there are more of us with this problem.

Maybe they need a BIOS update? Or a way to tell us what to change the settings to. I think this is a big problem right now. It may even fix our issues with the fans.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
