VAIO Type S - Page 57

my S170 has never shut off by itself

it has gone into standby/hibernate if i set it to do so after a period of inactivity

im running performance settings when plugged in and adaptive on battery

make sure you have fans set to 5 and not 1 maybe thats why it overheats

Sony said that if it was a heat issue it would not turn on right after. It would make me wait a few minutes until it cools down. This means it is either a hardware or software problem. I'm hoping the latter.

Have any of you run your notebook at Home/Office Desk power management setting for long periods of time without any abnormal behaviour?

Also as a sidenote, do your fans ever completely shut off or are they always on to a certain degree?

Thanks for your input,
Jon

My wireless issue is resolved. I updated the driver, played around a bit (wish I knew exactly what I did) but it's now working fine.

As for other issues that people have posted about... I do hear the fan but it's not too loud. My recently FUBAR'd Compaq Presario had a fan that made anyone within 30 feet think that a plane was taking off. This is nothing. I haven't noticed any HD clicking. The bottom gets warm but again, nothing compared to the Compqrap I have. I'm loving it.

Is this game just to much for this machine?

Did you resolve this issue?

Has anyone ordered their S170 with the Celeron processor and upgraded to a Pentium M processor? It's a lot cheaper to do this. The 1.7ghz processor is $255 at newegg, whereas the upgrade costs like $300 or $350. Plus, you get an extra Celeron processor.

has anyone tried the counter-strike:source beta on the s170? i'm pretty dissappointed with its performance. in widescreen mode, only 32.8 fps. and in normal 1024x768 about 43.2 fps. this was found using the video stress test. 9700, 512, and 1.7 is my setup. also i tried it on my sisters new s150, she had 27.9 widescreen, and 34.8 normal. that was on a 9200, 512, 1.6 setup. i would think the difference should be more. also the avg fps among people on the beta seemed to be 50-60. any comments?

Ordered an S170 from pcnation.com Friday afternoon at 4 PM, and thanks to their excellent staff it arrived Saturday morning at 11:30. That's from LA to Florida in no time at all (worth the 76 bucks as I needed it for L school this monday). Nice work. Furthermore, the notebook is badass

Can someone confirm if the S series comes with a slot for a security cable (i.e. Kensington), please? I'll be using it in an open plan office so want to make sure it's secure. This is the last thing I need to check (I can't find it on the spec sheets anywhere (even the Japanese ones!)). Thanks.

Yes it does, on the right side, next to the USB ports.

Wow!!!! I get 8% student discount! I guess it does matter who you call, cause the last guy I spoke to said it was only 4%, regardless of which school you go to. I'm going to place my order either tonight or tomorrow, and have it shipped to school so that I'll get it just a few days after I get there.

Oh, and for a lock, look at Kensington or Targus. Having a lock is better than nothing, although most of those locks can be easily picked in 30 seconds or less with a bic pen and a pair of scissors.

Pcga-hdm06

Does anyone know if the PCGA-HDM06 needs an AC adapter when it's plugged in to an S-Series laptop? (I have an S170).

Sony-Style Link to PCGA-HDM06

The web page says that you don't need one with these laptops:

"With the usage with the following notebooks, no AC adapter for the external hard drive is required:
TR series notebook
SRX series notebook
VX series notebook
C1M series notebook
R505G, R505E, R505D series notebook"

I'm looking for a good external hard drive that doesn't require an external AC adapter.

Please let me know if anyone has any experience with the PCGA-HDM06 or if you have any other suggestions for an external hard drive.

Thanks.

I think the concensus is that its not worth the trouble. You need to keep the extra celeron in order to get warranty service. So your saving less than $100. In my case $100 is not worth the time installing the CPU. It's easy enough, but a lot can go wrong. However, I think a couple of people did actually do that. Don't know if they were in these forums, and not sure if they will see your post.

Anyways, you are getting 8% off, you lucky punk, use that savings and get the pentium :P

Can't say what school, but they did confirm my ID #.

i am pretty sure i will be getting a type s,

my question is, 1.8 or 2.0, is it worth the extra $500?

i guess money isn't a huge factor, since ive already committed myself to spending a ton on my new laptop, but is it reaaally worth it?

could you private message/email me your school name?

can anyone confirm that they confirm your id number. In other words, if you used a fake id # and they said they couldn't find you in the system, pls post. It shouldn't be a big deal, since you could always say your an incoming freshman. But if my school has a good discount, I still wouldn't offer them my ID# which is my social security #! I never give that out besides to people at school.
