All you guys that know about the S-Type... I have a question.

A friend of mine is ready to buy an S-Type. He has 2,000 dollars to spend on it, but he wants one with the 9700 ATI M-Radeon.

Is the best place to buy PC Nation? And if so, which specific model would you recommend he buy?

I was under the impression that those marked as S170s are the ones equiped with the 9700. Am I mistaken?

No the S170 just means build-to-order. Some of them have the 9200.

I just looked at the chart again, and I think the one with the 9700 in his price range is the VGN-S170B14.

VGN-S170B14 at PC Nation

13.3 WXGA XBRITE
M11-P 64MB (9700)
IntelĀ® 715(Pen-M 1.5GHz)
DVD/CD-RW
512MB(256Mx2)
60GB
802.11b/g
WinXP Pro

Be sure to call and double-check that it does have the 9700, because that chart is not always accurate.

It seems like most people who bought from PC Nation had a good experience.

OT, but I think I figured out a little more about Sony's XBrite technology, bloke. It appears to be a TN screen, not MVA like I thought. Read this: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/dis...26/lcd-07.html Not a lot of detail, but confirms everything in the XBrite developer's interview. It would make sense for them to use the same technology in both desktop and laptop LCDs. Of course this is all just conjecture. I don't think anyone outside knows what's going on inside Sony.

Thanks Bloke. I will go ahead and pass the info to him and have him call in tomorrow to ask if that one is equiped with the 9700.

BTW: Another question for those that have bought from PC Nation... do they charge tax on those located in California?

Interesting info. I've spent a good amount of time searching English and Japanese sites trying to track down exactly which of the well-known bright technologies they're using and who makes their panels (AU and Chi Mei are the two names I've seen most often). I guess they're trying to keep it a mystery so they can claim to have a unique technology, or at least one that's somehow better than the other bright screen technologies.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I read that they have warehouses in a few different states and may cross-ship from a warehouse outside your state if you ask them.

I'm can't say if they have a California warehouse or not.

Most likely, all these PCNation type places just use drop shipping from Ingram Micro, which has a warehouse in California.

Someone confirm this!!!!!

Someone confirm theseI just went to sonystyle.com and noticed the following...

$50 drop in upgrade to Radeon 9700
$50 Drop in upgrade to Pentium 735 1.7 Ghz.

I repriced an old system I had configured and it came out over $100 lower, dont know what else dropped in price.

I'm not sure about SonyStyle, but the ads for CompUSA and CircuitCity both said there was a $100 price drop on the retail S150 a week or two ago. I wasn't sure if it was just typical advertising BS or not, but maybe they have dropped prices a bit.

PCNation charged me $19 to do a warehouse transfer so that I wouldn't have to pay more than $100 more in tax.

Also, the S series got mentioned on Gizmodo today: http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/is-s...top-021565.php

edit: and my S was shipped to California.

FYI

Just received my S170 from SonyStyle.com. Great machine and seems to be working wonderfully, however, haven't really put it throught the paces yet. I will report back more fully later.

One curious item. I opted for the 60G Hardrive. It is a partitioned drive, however, and the C:/ drive only shows maximum space of 13.9GB with 8.04GB still available while the D:/ drive shows a maximum of 36.9GB with 36.8GB still available. It's been a while since I took elementary school math, but this only adds up to 50.8GB. A nearly 10GB difference in the size of the hard drive is a little annoying.

Anyone else notice this or have any explanation?

5GB for your hidden recovery partition, 5GB for file headers, space lost in formatting the drive to NTFS.

Any 60GB drive only has about 55-56 GB useable space after it is formatted.

Thanks so much for your response.

Forgive my naivete, but what is NTFS. Additionally, why two drives and why such a huge disparity in the size of the drives?
NTFS = New Technology Filesystem

Google that if you want more information.

And its cheaper to include the backup/recovery stuff on the laptop than create a CD/DVD combo + cases + manuals.. but again, use google for more information on that.

Even if they were to leave off some of that "addhesive grossness" I think a little rub with some alcohol would take it off easily.
