yes the S series is 4.2 pounds (~ 2 kg). Don't know anything about the 5650, you should look up some benchmarks. If you don't mind the wieght of the 8600 and/or your looking for top of the line graphic cards, the S series is not for you.
Heres an update on my order:
First order got returned because fedex couldn't deliver to my job. That was a huge headache and I found out that sony has strict delivery limitations, such that you can't even go pick up the package from fedex.
This has made me hate Sony, after their customer service couldn't do anything. They haven't even refunded me the money yet. Also, they just basically said tough, and that I would have to reorder.
So I reordered and I think I got the sales person to take $80 off overnight shipping. I decided to purchase the two laptops instead of one at a time since it would save me on shipping. Also, the price of the S series had gone down, so I saved a few dollars there too. It was $1900 for each laptop and they both are configured as: 1.7A Ghz, 256 MB ram, ATI 9700, Bluetooth+ LAN, 40 Gig HD, CDRW, 1 year warranty, XP Home. The shipping came to $155 for both systems. And I saved $40/system off shipping because I think the system should have been $1940 each. I guess that is the only way the guy could pass on the savings to me. Total is was about $4250.
I'm now trying to battle customer service about the shipping. For some reason, it says it won't be shipped until 10/04/04. That is some BS overnight shipping. They don't care and they aren't listening. Hopefully, regular reps tomorow won't be as stupid as wekeend reps.
Moral of the story: Next time I will gladly pay more from any one other than Sony. If only some one had the 9700 at around the same weight :/ Sony is a good Japanase company, but the have the worst American workers.
