VAIO Type S - Page 70

yes, very easy. Theres like a little door on the bottom of the laptop with two screws. Take those screws out and insert the memory module and then seal it back up and your done. Be careful, which way you put in the memory, as forcing it may break it. It's not very intuitive, but patience will help. Check out sony.thumbrocket.com, I think it has pictures on that.

It's also shown in the user manual...

i'm assuming it is but just doublechecking

seems like a good price

It's a MicroDimm, so yes, it should be compatible. Best way to find out would be to send an email to the place selling it. Hopefully, they'd be knowledgeable.

Performance difference - 9200 vs 9700

Hi,

I know the 9700 is better for gaming, but how much better? Can anyone approximate an overall percentage gain? Are any benchmarks available? Also - will the laptop run hotter or have less battery life with the 9700?

Thanks!

Chris

Compared to the 9200? It's a LOT better. If you do 3-d gaming and you like to be able to get a fast frame rate, the 9700 is the way to go...

The 9200 will run games like Warcraft 3, etc, perfectly fine.

Arctic Silver

Hi all,

Has anyone tried putting Arctic Silver (3,5, whatever) on the GPU, heatpipe, etc.? I know that ikuto's done it (over at sony.thumbrocket.com) for the CPU, but it seems like the GPU is harder to get at. Thanks!

And 9700 supports directx9 and 9200 is only dx8, so you get more eyecandy too.

Have noticed a problem with my S170 when the screensaver is functioning. When it begins to run, there is a pause in the screensaver activity approximately every ten seconds or so, just for a second or two any then it starts functioning again. This occurs regardless of which screensaver is running. It doesn't do it when previewing the screensaver, just when it is actually running. Anyone have any ideas what would cause this?

Any input appreciated. Not a very big deal, but it annoys me that I cannot figure out what is doing this.

...errm, why are you bothering with a screensaver, given that LCD screens aren't subject to burn in....??

What about power consumption and heat? Is the 9700 worse in these departments than the 9200?

Ordering my S270 ASAP.
Ordering it with the barebones Processor, HD, and Memory.
Planning to install Pentium-M 755, 60GB @7200 (Is there an 80 or 100 out yet), and the Kingston 1GB stick.

Planning on using for video editing for websites, photoshop, basic office use, and web surfing.

Should I be looking for an upgraded sound card, or is the stock setup good?
I was playing with the 260 at Best buy last night, and it sounds pretty lousy.

Any thoughts?

Hmm,

You used what sound in the middle of Best Buy? Like the onboard speakers? If that BB is anything like the one I'm at.. you can't judge anything playing sound in the middle of that store. You have tons of external sound coming from every which way.. but regardless..

Look at this one,

USB sound cards are okay, I've just never liked them.. I have no idea how ^^ that one is.. I just thought it looked cool enough.

As far as the stock goes, I don't have my 270 here yet, so I can't vouch for its goodness or suckyness, all I know is reviewers rate it higher than the powerbook, and I thought that apple sounded good.

Do you think it's possible to get a barebone computer ?

Max
No sony doesn't do that,

I was thinking of doing the same, but I rather not void my warranty. I am switching out the hard drive, but you can do that and no one can tell. If you switch out the cpu, sony's thermal paste tape/pad won't be there, which will be a huge give away.. but if you aren't worried about that and want to save a significant amount of money, go barebones.
just curious but is the 260 model have a quieter fan than the old 170?

All that talk of 2GB upgrades for our S series VAIOs got me worked up and I decided to make the jump since I need the extra memory for my Photoshop projects.
